For the 50th anniversary, Galileo will be temporarily relocating from Space Center Houston to the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City. Intrepid will be hosting a Star Trek exhibit over the summer. She left Houston on Thursday...

For those of you in the northeast, this will be the best time to see the old girl. I am not sure when she's on display, but sometime in May.

It would be fun to be driving along the highway and see that distinctive silhouette on the trailer!

Yeah, some geek's going to swerve off the road doing a double-take at that!

Hmmm...Fleet Week's the last week of May...maybe they'll put it on display to coincide with that?

Oh, my goodness. Why can't it come to California?

Wow. I hope it doesn't get creamed by a texter driving a cement mixer on the road to NY.

Well, Intrepid asked... which is why its going to NYC. I might have had a hand in that... if a museum in California wants to ask...

I drove by the Intrepid twice yesterday. I ought to bring my son down there when the Trek exhibit opens.

For maximum stability, shouldn't they have used 4 mounting points?:)

I don't think that matters at all. They probably used 4 points while filming because it gave them more control to move the shuttle around to simulate flight, especially the bouncing around scenes during "The Galileo Seven."

It WAS funny. Thanks for the comparison.

So the background: when we rebuilt her, we in fact put in "pick points" so that she could be safely lifted. The internal structural support is very sound and it made sense for future moves - you really don't want to lift her from below (which is the two landing pads and the landing leg.) Never quite expected that she would go on Intrepid, mind you, but... she's actually quite solid, now.

With a crew composed entirely of Vulcans, what could go wrong?
