I was surprised when I couldn't find a thread about this, but I suppose it's understandable that people might not be as hyped for this one. The Thor movies are arguably the weakest overall in the MCU, Loki aside.

Anyway, I thought it was worth starting up a thread because I just found some pretty big casting news: Tessa Thompson has joined the cast in an undisclosed role, and Natalie Portman will not be returning.

I can't say I'm terribly surprised about Portman's departure. She was allegedly not happy with Marvel after they parted ways with Patty Jenkins during pre-production on The Dark World, and I feel like the only reason she even got involved in the series was for the chance to work with Kenneth Branagh on the first movie.

Still, it'll be interesting to see who Thompson will be playing. Any ideas?

I didn't realize Portman was that unhappy with the Thor movies. It's a shame because I like her.
I wonder if Kat Dennings will be back? She's got to be pretty busy with 2 Broke Girls, and her only real role was as Jane's sidekick, so it would be weird to have her but not Jane.

Seemed like these Thor movies had a lot of big names who didn't want to return. Hopkins said he had done enough.

I don't think Portman leaving is actually confirmed.

She was very displeased when Patty Jenkins wasn't directing Thor 2 anymore. There were rumors that Jane and Thor had split up was to be mentioned in Age Of Ultron. They were still quite together though at that time though. So, who knows.

Have a lot of the actors' been unhappy with Marvel? I know they've butted heads with a few of the directors, but I thought most of the actors had been happy.

Given the focus on the Nine Realms, it makes sense to not have Jane Foster in it, imo.

@JD Ed Norton, Terrance Howard and Mickey Rourke are the ones who spring to mind for me.

Surely Portman was signed to at least three films?

No Jane Foster, and maybe no Odin, Sif, or Volstagg. I'm starting to lose a bit of my enthusiam for this one.
Oh, I forgot about them. Although I've gotten the impression that they might not always be that easy to work with themselves.

So are they gonna pretend Jane is off-screen getting a Nobel prize, or are they gonna write her out compeltely?

Like Worf showing up out of nowhere in the TNG movies even though he should have been on a different assignment a thousand light years away, I think it's going to become the running joke of every MCU movie with Thor that Jane is off somewhere doing big, important things, and couldn't be around at all to pop in for the big adventure.

Worf in the Trek movies made sense. His trips to the Enterprise just happened to coincide with the movies. He didn't show up out of nowhere, they just didn't devote significant screen time to showing us how he got there and rightfully so.

If a lot of the action takes place off-world or if Thor doesn't show up in her area on Earth, her absence wouldn't seem forced.

Plus, I didn't miss seeing her in The Avengers or Age of Ultron because it's understood that big stars don't usually do small appearances.

Lots of names dropping out it seems. Hopefully they'll be able to get together a roster that could make up for all these missing people. Having the Hulk and Cate Blanchett seem like a start. And Tessa Thompson could be interesting.

I hope we see Sif, but I'm glad to see Portman go. I don't hate her, but she was the worst part of The Dark World, and having a Thor movie focus on Asgard/the nine realms instead of Earth or some human woman, would be a nice change of pace after the last two Thor movies (which I liked, but I've always wanted more Asgard stuff).

Since its called Thor: Ragnarok, I'd like to see as little of Earth as possible. Maybe a brief cameo from Selvig or something, but I want to see more of the nine realms that we haven't seen before, and a focus on the mythology (the Marvel mythology, not the actual norse mythology) of the character.

And two of those names remind us that they can always recast if they need to.

^ I hope they don't resort to that. It's not a good solution.

Normally I'd agree, but in both of those cases it worked out for the better.

I like Mark Ruffalo and Don Cheadle but my disdain for recasting is such that I can't say that it worked out. I'd say that it's just something I have to accept. My preference is to either keep an actor in a role no matter what or just write them out.

Marvel will have to recast everyone eventually if they intend for the MCU to continue on through the next decade.
