Thor: Ragnarok

Norton was a better type to play Banner, but since we got Ruffalo's Hulk, I find Norton's Hulk painful to watch (the character, not the whole movie). I'd say that's a case where the recasting worked out really, really well.

@JD Ed Norton, Terrance Howard and Mickey Rourke are the ones who spring to mind for me.
The ones you mentioned, plus Jon Favreau, Edgar Wright, and Hugo Weaving. We know about Whedon leaving, and his disagreements with Marvel regarding their conflicting visions for Age of Ultron. Jamie Alexander has said repeatedly she doesn't know whether she'll be back for Thor 3. No one has contacted her.

Portman is like JLaw, in that she doesn't want to do CBMovies anymore and wants more serious film work, like Black Swan (the film she won an Oscar for). Portman hasn't really done anything with her post-Oscar career though.

Ruffalo did bring something to the role the way RDJ brought his brand of charisma to Tony Stark. A lot of people agreed on that.

I keep hoping for a darker Thor but I learned from the last movie not to get my hopes up for that. I did like Jane (somewhat) but it's actually good news that she's gone. Now they can actually focus on Thor and his universe.

You mean the JLaw that just recently said she's "dying to come back" for more X-Men? ;)

Given the focus on the Nine Realms, it makes sense to not have Jane Foster in it, imo.
Yeah, this unconfirmed news surprised me at first, too, but since she doesn't have powers, she'd probably just be slowing the group down. They could always do a brief cameo for her at the start, but...

Surely Portman was signed to at least three films?
Very possibly, in which case they may be saving the third movie for one or both parts of Infinity War, depending on whether she'd agree to do both.

Marvel will have to recast everyone eventually if they intend for the MCU to continue on through the next decade.

Or have a new Character become the Hero with the original in a mentor role(unless dead)..like Tony Stark could groom a new Iron man..Thor becomes ruler of Asgard and promotes someone else whose worthy to wield his Hammer to represent him on Earth..and so on.

I'm still hopeful that they'll work something out with Hopkins to come back. I'd love for Ragnarok to in part be about Odin returning from Valhalla with Frigga, while also introducing Valkyrie into the MCU. I don't want to replace Sif, just also give us Valkyrie.

The only actor whose not coming back that I can see really having an impact of the story is Anthony Hopkins' Odin. With the way The Dark World ended I was expecting to deal quite a bit with Loki pretending to be Odin. I guess they could just start with Loki having already been found out, or show us Hiddleston and just pretend everybody is seeing Hopkins, but either one is pretty clearly going to just feel like them trying to work around Hopkins' absence.

Tessa Thompson joins the cast as a "kind of" super-hero who will appear in future Marvel movies.

Perhaps Valkyrie?

Or... thinking outside the box here... Carol Danvers? Race swapping arguments aside (and this is just a theoretical thought anyway), Bruce Banner/Hulk will be in it, so why not introduce a future leading character here as well? It does fit in with the Marvel pattern of cross-pollination of characters and would establish her to audiences before her own movie.

No need to racebend Carol Danvers. Monica Rambeau was Captain Marvel before Carol.

If they did go the Monica route, that would subvert A LOT of expectations. Since most readers today have no idea Monica carried the title and Marvel has renamed her several times since the 80s.

I think regardless of the race of the actress playing her, Marvel would use Carol Danvers because hers is the more recognizable name.

Well they did use Scott Lang over Hank Pym for Ant-Man. Also they used Helen Cho (who only has a handful of appearances on Hercules titles in the MU), over her son Amadeus Cho who is a much bigger player in the MU, for AoU.

Scott Lang, I think, was more on Edgar Wright than Marvel, and given the lateness of his leaving the project, they probably didn't have time to rework anything as major as the lead character. Helen Cho was a bit player and not a leading role like Carol Danvers will be. I also think Marvel is more likely to simplify the somewhat convoluted history of the Captain Marvel name, which means excising characters like Rambeau.
