Wish List for Star Trek: 2017

Actions have consequences. These consequences may last a lifetime. No "reset button" at the end of every episode. You don't get over PTSD, or the death of a lover, or massive invasive surgery, in time for next week.

Have fun, but don't be afraid to go dark - I prefer lighter fun stuff, but I also like darker stuff like The 100 and nuBSG. I would love to see the new Trek series find a way to strike a balance between the two styles.
Diversty- Diversity was always a big selling point of Trek, and with being such a hot bottom issue now, they really need to pay attention to it in the new series. We need to get at least one LGBT character in here.
Combine the old and new - I would love to see a series that is about new worlds, and new civilizations, but at the same time doesn't forget about the preexisting stuff like the Vulcans, Klingons, Cardassians, Ferengi, ect.
An alien captain - We've haven't gotten an alien captain, so I would love to see the new series give us one.
An arc - I definitely prefer that a show has an arc to it, but it should loose enough that the episodes can have their own smaller individual stories within the arc.

With you apart from the alien captain. Star Trek is the story of humanity's future, and the captain is the hero of that story (usually). It resonates more when that future is recognisably human, IMHO. Plus, in the 'captains we've never seen' category are plenty of human options. Heck, we've only had one woman.

I am with you on this one. I don't need it to be the Enterprise, but I am fine with the story being tied up neatly in one hour. I also am fine if they don't use "shaky cams" or cast everything in shadow or have a ship full of depressed, sociopathic, evil people.
I'm with you guys too.

I would love a new ship, and crew. The Enterprise has had a good run, but with so many decent ships in the fleet, it's time to meet another group and see things from their point of view.
Such as DS9, or Voyager, you mean. Naw, we already did that.

For me, nothing too gritty or Battlestar Galactica (I loved BSG, don't get me wrong). I like Star Trek when it's shiny. Even the Dominion War looked nice. And the Borg Invasion in First Contact, too.

Set it even further into future so that the whole JJ Trek timeline shenanigans are moot. Set it on an Enterprise. I don't care whether the Captain is male, female, black, white or whatever but make the Captain The Captain. The boss, the gaffer, the head honcho leading from the front. Sprinkle in a couple of new races, depending on where the Enterprise is, but don't go mad. It's unlikely that the Romulans, Klingons, Andorrians etc will have ceased to exist in a few hundred years but their characteristics may have changed. I'm not sure about including actors from previous Treks, you can never get enough Tony Todd for example. On the whole I'd like to see some but, sadly for them, only in cameos.

"New ship" does not automatically mean "copy Voyager" and that's a very dishonest and defeatest thing to do.

It's not being made by the same people, or the same universe and being made now, in 2016/17, why you would think it would copy Voyager is baffling.

Effective use of light and shadow can set a powerful mood, and provide an strong indication of what's going on in a scene. Every scene doesn't have to be evenly lit.
One idea I would like to see is if both the captain and executive officer are women.
Having the captain be a human woman from a culture that today discourages women from being in positions of authority would be great, and yes it would be a intentionally "message."

I'm not saying it would be a copy. I responded to your point about not having it on the Enterprise with "we already saw that", which is true, we have. That doesn't mean it would be a copy.

So, no one like Uhura or Chekov. Got it. :)
Yes.

When has anyone ever since of the dawn of time said "Chekov was my favourite character!"?

And if anyone ever did, their reason would be "because nuclear wessels!" or "he's cute!".

I want STAR TREK!!

I don't want serialized crap. I want a weekly adventure with occasional 2-parters. There is way to much serialized stuff on TV... I could easily watch that if that's what I want.

Positive message.

On the Enterprise.

My crew doesn't need to die to tell a good story. Just like the story does need to suffer because we can make things look cool and blow things up.

Exploring space, human condition, etc.

Again, I want STAR TREK!!! ... not BSG, Stargate, FarScape, BAB5, etc...etc.... etc....
Things change for better or worse. Star Trek needs to evolve to survive, not stay in its confined box of being an episodic TV series set on the Enterprise. I've had enough of that with TOS and TNG.

Yup... if I want BSG - I'll watch BSG.

I'll be pissed if they put up a ""Mitt (milk-toast) Romney". A series that is Trek in name only.

This franchise hasn't lasted 50 years because it was broken. It lasted that long because it's unique and special. Don't need to go away from that.

Just look how successful 'The Martian' was.... everything doesn't need to have a "dystopian' theme.
Oh yes, because an episodic series set on the Enterprise is SO unique in 2016.

If they want to last another 50 years, how about doing something unique and special in this day and age, WITHOUT straying too far from the source material. You know, we don't have to go from one extreme to another.

I agree that having the new series feature an Enterprise seems repetitive, well, there's no 'seem' about it, but this is Star Treks Big Come Back, it's 68 Comeback Special, if you will. I think without an Enterprise and all the other recognisable tropes it could just be a generic Sci-Fi TV show. Could, not categorically would.

With good writing and characters, no, it shouldn't. That's what Star Trek is, that's why people will tune in for the new series.

If they so desperately want to see JUST the Enterprise, mark July 22 on your calendar for Star Trek Beyond. That should fill your hunger quite well... (although it does seem they're destroying it for the 73rd time just going by the teaser trailer).

Did anybody else think they're doing that because it's the 3rd film and they're trying to keep the history repeating itself theme running? I hope not.

The only way I'd want the new show to be on the Enterprise if it's a new Enterprise we haven't seen before.
