Why do people die in Star Trek?

Because it's not possible. What happened to Riker was a freak accident in unusual circumstances and cannot be intentionally recreated. Why it works that way? I don't know. Insert made up technobabble as needed. If really knew how transporters worked I'd be filling a patent application instead of arguing about TV shows on the internet.
The unusual circumstances are the ionization. That could conceivably be replicated, on another planet, or you test it right there on the planet were Lieutenant Riker (Thomas) was found. Any planet with the ionization would work.

Not to speak for @The Wormhole but I think his point is that the "enlightened" people (trademark pending in the 24th century do not mourn. If you read any of the Behind the Scenes drama from Michael Piller and his first script on TNG, "The Bonding." In short, GR called him in to the office and told him that the story, as written, didn't work because people don't mourn in the future. Death is accepted as a part of life.

As for why do people die, I would say that it is due to something unique being lost at the time of death. Sure, you can clone people but are they the exact same person? Didn't they clone O'Brian once?

My question was how is it enlightened to mourn. Death is a part of life.
What unique thing was lost at death?

TNG season 1.
I don't think that's what actually happens. (What episode you actually mean? "The Bonding" wasn't on first season...) No one is telling the kid in "The Bonding" that it is wrong to mourn. The crew obviously mourns Tasha in the first season.

Well, I did not see that (because I have Chemahkuu on ignore).
How was I supposed to see that (yes there is a button to show ignored content, but that defeats the purpose of ignoring)?

@PhaserLightShow

You were asked whether you saw the post and you gave an answer. How was anyone else here supposed to know that you had Chemahkuu on Ignore?

They didn't. Until I said so. I gave a valid answer (one that does not apply to all people). Now can we get back to the discussion at hand that this thread was created to have? Please? For a Newbie who is a Commander?
(for the record, this post was made on Stardate 2016.41)

But, they don't mourn, at least in GR's vision.

Also, what is unique? That's a metaphysics question, as discussed in "Measure of a Man." as to whether or not Data has a soul. Riker makes a similar argument against cloning that one Riker is unique.

As to what makes them unique, again it's a question of the soul. Some part of the person is lost that can't be duplicated, whatever makes them unique.

Corollary: How are we supposed to know a priori who you have on ignore?

Personally, I prefer all the facts - even, perhaps especially, the offensive ones. Keep your enemies closer. ;)
