The New Mutants -- news, rumors, opix, etc;

Well, Gambit may be delayed for the rest of eternity, but it looks as if Josh Boone's The New Mutants movie is moving forward. It looks as if we will be getting something resembling the original team as Game of Thrones' Maise Williams has been cast as Rahne Sinclair aka Wolvesbane (we have to get Jean and Rahne together somehow...) and Anya Taylor-Joy has been cast as Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik.

Alexandra Shipp's Storm is also said to be appearing, so I'm assuming that they will be keeping the 80s timeframe.

We saw Sunspot and Thunderbird in DoFP, so if they are using the 80s timeframe, we might not get to see them. But I also want to see Moonstar and Cannonball on the big screen.

I've always had a soft spot for the New Mutants. They were the first X-Men team that I followed from issue one. I never cared that they weren't called "X-Men". They went to the school, they wore the uniforms, they were X-Men. Looking forward to the movie.

Maisie Williams/Arya Stark (sigil a Direwolf) will be playing Wolfsbane. This has to be someone's idea of a joke. Haha.

Too bad about Gambit, but outside of Laura Schiler-Donner, who else wanted to see a Gambit movie?

I've always thought that the New Mutants were cool, so I'm glad to see them get a movie. I hope we get Cannonball and Moonstar, but I also want to see Cypher and Warlock, although Warlock might be too expensive from a CG standpoint.

As for Gambit, if it ever gets made I'll watch it with an open mind, and I'm not predisposed to think badly of it, but its not a movie I remotely care about, and for a superhero movie that almost never happens. I'm just completely neutral to the character, and can think of a bunch of X-Men films I'd rather see before Gambit.

this was a pleasant surprise when announced. i'm looking forward to it. always liked the New Mutants. especially the early years.

Being Hollywood and all I'm surprised they didn't go right to X-Force.
New Mutants was announced last year; presumably to take the place of the main X-Men cast after the First Class trilogy wraps with Apocalypse.

X-Force will likely be spun out of Deadpool 2. Since we know Cable is coming.

I thought they were already working on an X-Force movie.
I don't know anything about the New Mutants, but since this has people from the main X-Men series involved I'm looking forward to it.
So with Maisie Williams in this, we now have both of the Stark daughters from Game of Thrones in an X-Men movie. I wonder if they get any scenes together in this or a future movie?

Wonderful to hear. As a kid, The New Mutants were my favorite comic. As a teenager in the 80's, I could easily relate to their story lines.

Heck, 30 years ago I had this poster on my wall:

^ It probably is. Sienkiewicz did the art on New Mutants from issue 18 through 31.

His issues covered the classic "Demon Bear" story, and the first ever appearances of Warlock, Guido- later to be known as "Strong Guy" in X-Factor and Legion.

Yeah, the NM reached it's height with the pairing of Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz. At the time nothing in the Marvel universe looked like that book.

@M.A.C.O. -- Harkening back to our conversation in the other thread, I had been searching for New Mutants collections, and was shocked that there weren't any Omnibuses or Epic collections yet. In fact, the last time NM was reprinted was 2006! Now, I think I realize why. I'd be willing to bet that the closer we get to the movie's release, as hype starts to build, we'll start seeing some classic NM material getting re-released.

Hopefully that is what happens.

It's not just New Mutants that has a poor trade collection. Much of Legion of Superheoroes (even Levitz's run), and none the the Satellite era of the Justice League are collected into hard copy. These are big deals. I doubt anyone today knows what Alpha Flight is, but New Mutants was hot back in the day.

Hey, I LOVE Alpha Flight, and the first series started in 1983, seven years before I was born. While I agree that more Legion needs to be collected (Legion of Superheroes is one of my favorite hero groups), that doesn't mean books like Alpha Flight don't deserve to be collected. Less popular old comics deserve attention too. Plus, I'd argue more people know Alpha Flight then know the New Mutants, since at least AF was unique in being a team of Canadian heroes. I like The New Mutants a good deal, but they were just young X-Men, not especially different in concept from other X-Titles over the years.
