How was USS Grissom destroyed so easily?

And it didn't help much that its captain was a milquetoast who probably didn't know the first thing about being in combat.
His bridge chairs were pink and when under attack his command was "Prepare for evasive?"
I do think he was captain enough for nice safe missions well inside Federation boundaries, but he couldn't take a piss without checking with Starfleet first.

Nothing wrong with pink!

Of course it was Nimoy's intention to make the Grissom crew seem like rank amateurs compared with our heroes, right down to the wussy pink chairs.

In the 23rd century, humanity have evolved to the point where they don't attribute wussiness to certain colors. :vulcan:

Neither do the Kzinti, as seen in TAS.

I recently read that until about the fifties pink was a 'manly' colour.

I wouldn't wear it myself. Though I did once die my hair that colour.

Yup. The Victorians saw it as a firey masculine colour, whereas blue was soft and feminine. It was pink for a boy and blue for girls.

Yep. Pink as girly colour is purely a product of late 20th century gendered marketing.

So what do we make of Sonny Crockett? Pink goes well with .45 semi-autos, too.

Didn't he dodge socks? And keep a pet alligator...dude was out there.

Actually it's the eighties. Pink was in especially if electric.

Nitpick correction: Sonny carried a Bren 10, which was a 10mm not a .45. Tho don Johnson did carry a .45 in Nash bridges.

It wasn't even that. If you just look at the Grissom itself you can quickly figure out what she was. She was a low speed Science Vessel designed for Planetary Survey. That big canoe slung under her? That wasn't the secondary hull. That was a downward pointing sensor platform. The Grissom itself was essentially a deep space tug with all the science sensors bolted in. In short the Grissom was the Federation equivalent of a NOAA vessel. She wasn't an explorer. She was what follows the explorer ships once things are safe.

The Oberth class was the top part of the ship. What we might think of as a modular multi role support vessel, capable of the base design being adapted to a number of tasks cheaply and quickly. (Just as NOAA vessels today are modular and can socket a number of carried specialized lab modules). There were probably cargo, rescue/towing, construction variants etc. useful utilitarian ships filling needed but unglamorous roles and tasks. Which goes a long way to explain their longevity.

As I said, think of the Grissom like a modern NOAA research ship, or something like a modern icebreaker. A ship operated by the military for mixed military/civilian purpose, but without combat capabilities beyond some light defense. The order to "raise shields" was likely a rarity during that era on a ship of that sort.

Maybe the Grissom was still trying to raise its shields, maybe their shields were at full strength but they just suck. It is a science vessel after all. A bird of prey is a warship. When Esteban saw the Bird of Prey right on his ass he was like OMG. He knew he was fucked.

But the Grissom was definitely armed. Kirk was worried that she might open fire on the Enterprise. Although I'm sure the Grisson would be no match for a fully manned and operation Constitution class starship.
Fully manned?
The Enterprise had a crew of 5 in TSFS.

@PhaserLightShow

I believe section31 agent was saying if the E had been fully manned and operational...which obviously it wasn't.

We saw what a BOP did to the Grissom. I'll put my money on the Enterprise with only five guys over the Grissom any day of the week.
