Almost as if that's a perfect lesson for a father to teach his gifted son, that he can be a beacon of light to show them a way, perhaps? It's almost too perfect.

That was kind of brought up, he's just also pointing out that people will freak the hell out.

Besides I find all this DC movies are dark and cynical kind of funny with Civil pretty much using the alien invasion that brought the Avengers together as an example of why they need a leash put on them, which implies people blame them for it. Which bravo to Marvel for killing the lighter feeling for their entire franchise with one trailer reminding people of the mountain of corpses they've been ignoring the whole time.

I would have made more sense if Lois had rushed in at the last moment and went to Superman's side and held him, pleading with Batman to spare him and that he needs Batman's help to save his human mother. That, sending Batman into his parental flashback and realizing how far he's fallen and that Superman is "just a man" doing what he thinks is right and Batman is the aggressor and antagonist here.

Um, that's exactly what happened? I mean, except for his parental flashback happening immediately because Clark says "You're letting Martha die," that's pretty much how it plays out.

Which is hilarious when you consider it was the leaders of the world government who sanctioned the nuking of NYC and commissioned Project Insight. The Avengers saved the day in both cases, where the system failed. Things get double hilarious when you consider General Ross' previous history with the super soldier program, Banner and Blonsky.

As for Marvel's mountain of corpses, things get triple hilarious. You know what they say though..

Agents of SHIELD season 1 said that large numbers of civilians and police officers died during the battle.

Daredevil season 1 and 2 had this hanging in Ben Ulrich's office.

New Civil War trailer shows the 'adjusted' numbers.

Not hundreds but 74!

But, Batman stalling when Supes/Clark says "Martha" is the problem when there's really no reason it should have caused Bats to do anything. What, has no one ever used the name "Martha" around him his entire life or does he go into a "What did you say?!" fit everytime he encounters someone with the name.

"Hi, welcome to Applebee's; my name is Martha and I'll be your server today..."
"What did you say?
"Uhh... did you want to hear about our specials?"
"What did you say?! Why did you say that?!"
"I'm going to leave you to your menu for a few minutes..."
"Who's MARTHA?!"

I'm saying the "humanizing" of Superman should have come before Batman was even close to killing Superman, Lois should have ran in before the "Martha" bit and more done to make Batman's flip make more sense rather than the name "Martha" simply being enough for Batman's mind to change and to give him pause.

Yes, lets focus on Stark making jokes and not on the reminder of the corpses left in the Avengers' wake.

Or focus on Batman/Superman, since Avengers has nothing to do with Jonathan Kent's world views or the tone of the movie we're discussing here. We might as well bring up the body count in "Three Amigos" to justify what's going on in Batman V Superman.

Another nit I'd pick is that I'm not entirely clear on Batman's state - specifically, his family life pre-Superman. He's meant to have been married and lost his wife in the Metropolis attack? Is that little girl meant to be his daughter?
The girl wasn't Bruce's daughter. He found her outside the building where her mother was.

Indeed.

You think there's a lot of cases where he's specifically told "You're letting Martha die" while while in the middle of a fight against an alien that makes him feel powerless like when he was a child?

Ok, I was just confused then. Probably didn't help that I heard him calling the older guy in the tower "Dad" (turns out it was "Jack"?) and after a bit of confusion assumed it was a father-in-law.

Although: does that mean no more Mercy Graves? Already? :wtf:
Of course. They seem to be approaching this film almost as the end of the Superman solo universe rather than the beginning, so it's a fire sale. Everything must go! We got Mercy dead, we got Jimmy Olson dead, we got Superman dead, we got Clark Kent dead, we got Lex in jail, we got Doomsday come and gone! I wouldn't be surprised if they don't bother to bring Clark Kent back when Superman is resurrected.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen, worse than Man of Steel and I'm considering displacing Episode II from my worst movie #1 spot.

So basically how dare Superman's dad be understandably worried that if his kid shows that he has weird powers he might end up strapped to a table and bisected by a government that in real life has been doing some pretty shady and probably illegal shit and so yeah kidnapping a kid to dissect him is sadly believeable.

I hate to break it to you but the Day The Earth Stood Still remake probably has a very acruate portrayal of how mankind will likely react to aliens showing up which is basically freaking the hell out.
The stuff he was saying, and doming wasn't the problem. The problem was that Johnathan Kent was saying that stuff. As the writer explained in the article I linked to, that goes totally against who the character has always been and what he represents in the Superman mythos.
Saw it on Friday and give it a solid A-. There's some things - the pacing, the dourness of Superman, and Eisenberg's Luthor - that could've been better, but overall I really really enjoyed it. And with Luthor, I'm aware that he's the son of the "proper" Lex Luthor so that helps... somewhat. Another nit I'd pick is that I'm not entirely clear on Batman's state - specifically, his family life pre-Superman. He's meant to have been married and lost his wife in the Metropolis attack? But overall what an impressive take on Batman and Bruce Wayne as a cynical, worn-out, tired older crimefighter who's lost Robin and is being pushed to extremes out of despondency. Some great interplay between him and Alfred. I really liked how he started out in such a dark place but seems to be edging back towards the light by the end.

The highlight though was Gal Godot as Wonder Woman surprisingly. Even for as little screen time as she got, she glowed and when she enters the fray to save Batman and take on Doomsday, it was fantastic. I'm so ready for her movie now.

Another thing that really really worked for me was using Martha's name to defuse the fight between Bats and Supes. I'd never picked up on the coincidence of Martha Wayne and Martha Kent both, so it took me by surprise. And what better way to shock Bats into backing off for a moment than by first throwing him back to his mother's death (who he couldn't save), then making a connection with this Alien. Probably my favorite moment of the movie, to be honest.

ETA: Despite not generally caring for this take on Lex though, I do have to admit I was blown away (ha...ha... ha...) by the audacity of his plan to get rid of the Senator. Although: does that mean no more Mercy Graves? Already? :wtf:

I thought they showed Mercy's empty chair right before the bomb went off.

I don't get this "critics bias" and "critics need to get in touch with mass culture" nonsense. The job of a critic is to express their (hopefully informed) opinion on the merits or lack thereof of what they are reviewing, not to kowtow or genuflect to audience expectations. THAT would be dishonest.
