That whole interview with Rod screams that he's an outsider in the process of creating the new series. Just an observation . . .
Mr Awe
I wonder if this series is going to go the route of most other popular shows today where there's always the risk of a lead character being killed off.
If so, I just hope it doesn't go into Game of Thrones level insanity. I think it's actually hurt the show now with so many great characters being killed.
True, although based on Fuller's recent work I think he would tend to agree. Certainly shows like Dead Like Me kept things very grounded despite the sci-fi premise. I don't think we will see a Star Wars like space fantasy, I think we'll be much closer in tone to The Undiscovered Country although I hope a bit lighter! This is what Meyers thinks. But he's working for Fuller and Kurtzman here. His ideas may be incorporated, but if Fuller and/or Kurtzman have a different idea about the direction of the show Meyers will have to go along with them.
Fuller is the exact guy you don't want on your show if you're trying to make some cookie cutter generic space fantasy.
His shows take worn, tired, cliché ideas and stories (kind of defines Primeverse Trek the last fifteen or so years, doesn't it?), and turns them around to make something fresh, compelling and clever. Who knew a serial killer show could have been the best show on TV last year?
I'm not even looking at Fuller's past Trek episodes, that was when his career was only starting up and he was heavily restricted as a junior writer working under Rick Berman and Brannon Braga.I'm optimistically hopeful with Fuller. Yeah I know most of his Trek experience comes from Voyager. Which was largely the definition of "inside the box" Trek. I do have to note that very many of Fuller's credited episodes are ones that did their best within those confines to step outside of the traditional box and have a little fun. The Bride of Chaotica jumps immediately to mind. It's a batsh@t crazy story and episode. But it is also wildly fun. Something that Voyager needed more of.

I don't think it's fair to judge him on his Voyager work. His own shows are what matter to me.
That could either mean writing that respects the viewer's intelligence and shows us some more interesting stories than we've seen before, or it could mean lots of technobabble and junk science.New Roth interview http://1701news.com/node/1169/new-tv-trek-be-smart-show.html
The benefit of being on a streaming service is it's not constrained by the 1 hour time slot. The show can add a 1-2 minute intro and make each episode longer without cutting into dramatic time or commercial time. Of course, there will probably be a shortened version for eventual syndication sales and international sales if it ends up on TV rather than streaming.I hope this new series doesn't succumb to the 10-second intro craze that has taken over lots of modern TV.
Give us that glorious classic Trek/Game of Thrones/True Detective 1-2 minute intro.
This stuff is important, dammit!
If Trek can come up with an intro as watchable as Game of Thrones, I'll be very impressed.I hope this new series doesn't succumb to the 10-second intro craze that has taken over lots of modern TV.
