Sacred Ground

Good episode:
Janewway did show that she was willing to risk her own life for a crewmember!
Hi Lynx! I like Sacred Ground, too - but then again, I like all episodes of VOY (except FURY). Sacred Ground was also Robert Duncan McNeill's favourite ep in addition to being his first direction. Well done, Flyboy!

And the most beautiful sentence a man can say is ...
I don't know about that. Annie Skywalker of STAR WARS has that beat, with this proclamation to his sweet petunia:

"I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere. Not like you. You're everything soft... and smooth..."

Well, each to his own ... I like that quotation by Anakin Skywalker ... but I prefer Tom's sentences in general (and the abovementioned one in particular). To me they are a lot more memorable and sound a lot less artificial than Anakin's love declarations. And besides the obvious reasons, they are memorable to me because they come from a more complex character than Anakin. Not that I don't like Anakin or anything like that. It's just that three feature films cannot portray a person to the extent that 172 episodes can - and in this sense I find that Tom is a much more interesting character (as well as a more interesting man) than Anakin.

Fair enough. Both Thomas Eugene Paris and Anakin "The Chosen One" Skywalker are so-called "bad boys" in their respective series. And I must agree that Tom has the edge on Annie.

But the quote that got me ... what trumps both Torres' Husband AND Skywalker was in "Blood Fever." In it she's in cartoon Klingon mode snarling at the Man she loves and dares to give this line utterance:

"I've picked up your scent, Tom. I've tasted your blood!"

Like he's been lifting his leg up and marking trees, to denote territory. And when she blurted out that hateful bit of dialogue, she was well-within Tom's personal space. Even that no-nosed chimp from the movie "Evolution" would've picked up Tom's scent, from that close range!

Well, I suppose Klingons are like that. They pick up the smell. Like that woman Neelix had sex with in PROPHECY. She really mad the impression that she was kind of sniffing at Neelix before deciding to have sex with him ...

Yes, Tom is the bad boy - but a very loveable one at that. He is not that bad in my book - he is just not mature enough. At least at the beginning of the series. But his personality develops a lot during the show and a lot of situations will show that he really isn't a bad boy but a man with a big heart.

As for Anakin Skywalker, his being bad would have been more convincing if someone else had played him. I thought Hayden Christensen was too "soft" for that. The actor himself comes across as a nice man so it was a bit difficult for me to believe that he was the biggest (or second biggest) villain in that galaxy.

BTW, Tom would have the edge on Anakin even if he were a bit worse. I prefer men who have a natural charm to their personality and don't have to resort to the Force (or any other magic) when wooing someone. Remember that scene in Attack of the Clones with the fruit? Anakin uses the Force to attract Padmé's attention. In contrast, anytime Tom enters the mess hall and gives you his boyish grin, I melt ... :luvlove::luvlove::luvlove:

That's a cool wallpaper for Tom! I'm a fan of the character, but I'm not sure I want him gracing my desktop. He had so much going for him, though, including a wife played by the most beautiful actress of VOY's regular ensemble. And it's totally believable that she would fall for him ... that's what's great about it. Unfortunately, that rubber head VOY imposed on her distracts from her beauty, rather than compliments it. As a result, "Faces" is my favourite B'Elanna episode. And whilst I love The Next Generation with a zealot's passion, I despise what the series had done with the Klingons:

The idiotic bumper-speak about everything honourable, the howling and growling at stupid shite ... their mating practices, especially. And almost all of it is there because some people making the show thought it was a hoot. Well ... I feel otherwise. I prefer how Klingons were portrayed in The Classic Series, but once they had that ... that head ... even their weapons became mentally challenged, like the unwieldy and laughable bat'leth.

But I did enjoy "Blood Fever," mostly because of The Theatre of the Absurd, I must say. "Oh! A Klingon can go through Pon Farr, if a Vulcan so desires for her to do so! There's no precedent in canon on this point, looking over our shoulder and spoiling all our fun!" Well ... you know ... who can argue with that? Hell ... even a potted plant can go through Pon Farr, if a Vulcan-in-heat touches one, why not? But it was all worth it, when they're back on the ship and B'Elanna warns her future husband to "becareful what you wish for." It was very cute. I'm just disappointed that they didn't hook up, immediately after, which they should've done. But that's entertainment ... what we crave for, inside.

Thanks. There are at least 50 with only him so there's more to come.

but I'm not sure I want him gracing my desktop
I have 4000 VOY desktop wallpapers (about one thousand made by me) and my PC keeps changing them every 15 minutes. In this way, it takes about 3-4 months for all the wallpapers to appear once. On reaching the 4000th, the cycle starts again.

As a result, "Faces" is my favourite B'Elanna episode.
Unfortunately I have no wallpapers for that episode yet and since there are other projects lined up for the near future, I can't promise anything. But some day I'll get to that episode, too. At least, that's what I hope for.
However, I have some B'Elanna wallpapers as you must have noticed at the 150th comment on this thread - I hope you liked that one - and I certainly have a LOT of Tom and B'Elanna ones.

I despise what the series had done with the Klingons
I don't really like the other Trek series so I can't comment (I like DS9 to a certain extent but I find all the other shows pretty boring - ENT being the worst). Klingons are not my particular favourites, either, but I understand that the existence of such races is imperative for Star Trek so they are OK. (My favourite species would be the Hirogens, closely followed by the borg.)

It was very cute. I'm just disappointed that they didn't hook up
I agree with that being cute - for me, however, this was an excellent story. I can even understand why it never happened on that episode.
Of course, for me Tom hooking up with Chakotay would have been the perfect pairing ... I guess I'll have to turn to fan fiction for that ... :(

Indeed, Thomas, be assured that B'Elanna #150 did not escape my notice. Truly a very beautiful woman. But besides that, I find Roxann speaks most eloquently. I just love the way she sounds, it gives a ring of truth to the technobabble she's occasioned to deliver. I buy her as the Chief Engineer. And her annoyances at the EMH, especially, always make me laugh. How she'll pause, seemingly trying to control her temper ... before she unloads! It's very cute and she seems to know that. Otherwise, let's see what else have we, here ...

Oh, yes, the 'other' TREKs that are out there have their allures, particularly TNG. However, the way The Classic Series presented Klingons, was - quite simply - as passionate people. They could be sneaky and all that, but they were also hot blooded, which was part of their charm. I wish that aspect was a permanent part of The Klingon Condition, but it's been replaced by something quite operatic, and, at times, foolishness. But, thanks to Roxann's performance, B'Elanna's a winner.

It's impressive that you've made so many desktop wallpapers for VOYAGER, I'm not sure that I've made that quantity of avatars and I've been using these forums for a little longer than you have! But as to the Tom/Chakotay slash, to each their own, as you say. I find pairing Chakotay with Janeway preferable. It's always bugged me how he was like the male version of Nurse Chapel with her crush on Mister Spock, like they just reversed it for VOY's needs. I have a feeling that he only carried a torch for Janeway because of the shortage of available females, onboard. But that's the military life, for you. Soldiers a long way from home get very desperate ....

I am aware of the first thing - but I've never known about the second. Is that so? To me, on VOY the most beautiful lines are usually delivered by Janeway ... maybe next time I should listen out for B'Elanna's way of expressing herself. However, I watch VOY in my mother tongue, so I know hardly anything about the original English voices - except Janeway's, which I think is better in my language than in English.

Like I said before I've never been too much into Klingons. However, I've always had the impression that they are fearsome and fearless warriors - even though my assessment is based primarily on VOY and DS9. But it's true that I was pretty taken aback when I learned that all the fearsome and fearless warriors were afraid of little fluffy plush animals ... :brickwall:

Thanks. Making pictures in my case has nothing to do with how long I've been on different fora. It's got something to do with how long I've been a fan of the show - which is more than a decade now. The whole thing with the pictures started because I wasn't really satisfied with the desktop wallpapers generally found on the internet. It's not that there weren't some of excellent quality - I just thought that there simply weren't enough of them made. So since I had completed a Photoshop course a few years before I fell in love with Voyager, I decided to put this knowledge into practice and the idea of VOY wallpapers was born.
But as to the Tom/Chakotay slash, to each their own, as you say. I find pairing Chakotay with Janeway preferable.
Which is interesting. A lot of people want Janeway and Chakotay together (and they get it in the relaunch novels), I'd love Tom paired up with Chakotay while the producer's original idea was that Tom should be Janeway's love interest before they abandoned the idea ...
