6 Reasons why Star Trek Beyond will be the most successful Star Trek movie in history

1.The demographics of China’s growth in movie theaters on the Mainland, where 15 new screens open daily. There are 5,600 cinemas with 28,000 screens, and that number is projected to nearly 2X this year.
2. Produced by JJ Abrams Force Awakens/Box office 2.053 billion
3. Written by Simon Pegg Total box office 4.3 billion
4. Directed by Justin Lin Total Box office 1.9 billion
5. Star Trek 50th Anniversary
6. JJ Abrams 2 film ST gross: $1.1 billion

Chinese possibly interested in buying Paramount

It has Ghostbusters the week before and Suicide Squad two weeks after release. It will need a bigger opening weekend than either of the first two to do better overall here in the States.

As far as China goes, it'll be interesting to see how Beyond performs in the Asian markets without Cumberbatch's name attached.

Honestly, I doubt the movie's going to do too well unless Paramount gets off its ass and starts promoting this thing. As every movie goes by, there's less buzz in the preceding months. We are four months away from release, and there's nothing other than a trailer indicating the crew is stranded following the Enterprise's destruction. IMDB even says "The plot is unknown at this time." We don't even know anything about Idris Elba's character, other than he's an alien named Krall. Four months prior to STID's release we knew Cumberbatch was a renegade Starfleet officer named John Harrison who would "detonate the fleet." Some speculated the ultra secrecy contributed to STID's weaker box office performance, and indeed Abrams himself admitted it was a mistake to keep Khan a secret. I would have expected less secrecy for this movie, not even more.

Yeah, the lack of promotion doesn't instill confidence. This was a troubled production and only the business decision to promote Pegg got some people to have more faith in it, but it could very well be a disaster.

Do you know any plot specifics about any of those other films coming out around the same time?

Yeah. I didn't think so.

I agree with most of your points except (6).

The two most recent ST films grossed $850m.

The one reason for optimism is JL knows how to work an ensemble cast, give everyone a part to play and tie it all together in a fun entertaining way. There are distinct beats in his movies, from moment of fast action and high drama; to quiet moments of introspection.

When he was appointed as director, I bought FF6 and enjoyed it thinking the camaraderie and teamwork from the cast would make great Trek.

We're still 4 months out. I'm not expecting a 2nd trailer until mid-late April.

I'm not expecting TV ads and billboards until June. It's too early in the advertising cycle.

At this point, we know a lot - in general - about STB.

Fans always clamour for more specifics.

We get 1 trailer for a generic summer blockbuster and we feel satiated.

We get 1 trailer for STB and we ask for more. Why? Cos we're fans.

You know-- a time travel scene to this era would be something to see:

That would also do well in China.

We saw with COSMOS that we might have ramscoop starships had the library at Alexandia not burned--same sort of thing.

I'd love to see some ocean going junks with a starship overhead---nice eye candy.

Yeah. I didn't think so.

Suicide Squad comes out two weeks after Beyond, and we just got the teaser trailer a couple weeks ago.

Take a look at the IMDB page for July movies. Of the twelve movies there, there are only three which don't have any real plot information, Beyond and Jason Bourne which both say the plot is unknown, and the new King Arthur movie which just calls it an adaptation of Sir Lancelot's story, which might not be saying anything but is still more than "unknown." Hell, even the majority of other movies released after July have something more substantive than "unknown" written up for them.

Well, we do know something about STB's plot if interviews with JL in Dec were accurate.

Mild spoilers . . .

The crew of the good ship Enterprise, travel the universe and spread the gospel of the Federation.

Come join us and live this utopian life.

So what happens when they stumble across an unknown part of space and run into a species that wants nothing to do with the Federation?

Well, this is where the 'frontier pushes back' to quote Krall.

Think what happened to the Romans when they stumble across the Germanic frontier; or British redcoat when they underestimated the Zulus.

All heck breaks loose and our crew gets their collective backsides handed to them by Krall.

How then does Captain Kirk 'win'?

He tries to show the other side that perhaps the Federation is worthy of joining by his words and his actions.

Based on the Ghostbusters trailer, I'd say it doesn't represent much competition. The big question is whether Independence Day will still be soaking up the sci-fi dollar at the box office when Beyond comes out.

I don't see how us not knowing the exact plot before seeing the movie is any kind of an issue. And anyway, from looking at the teaser trailer it's pretty clear what the plot will be.

Always hoping for the very best, Beyond looks like it's going to be a lot of fun and I hope others will think so too. This is however the year jammed with the most must-see films ever. Worst case scenario, we get a third movie that underperforms against very stiff competition and don't see a fourth. But that's still going to be a third reboot Trek film I'm gonna enjoy for years to come!

i hope the op is correct. with all the comic films these year, beyond seems to be getting lost to me at times.

So then why hasn't Paramount released an official plot description? Even a horribly edited one like the "detonate the fleet" thing we had for STID would be something. I remember a blog written while Cumberbatch's role was still a secret, complaining about the fact. In it they argue that revealing the character's identity can only help promote the film since saying "the Enterprise fights Khan" or Gary Mitchell or Captain Garth or Cloud William sound a lot more exciting than "the Enterprise fights someone." The same applies here, providing something as minimal as one sentence giving a vague idea about the movie makes it sound more interesting and will plant more butts in the theatre than saying "plot is unknown" does.

Seriously?
The Enterprise stops at a deep space waystation, then is attacked and grounded by aliens hostile to the Federation. After abandoning ship, the crew are dispersed across the surface of an alien planet, where they make friends (notably the white-faced, butt-kicking Jaylah) and confront enemies.
Does that seriously equal "plot is unknown" to you?

Unless the movie is really, really good. I don't see it being as big as ST2009.

STID made less than ST2009 overall, and I think STB will make less than STID. STB has a smaller budget than STID, which means it probably has a smaller marketing budget as well.
