Even if it's set in the new timeline, a TNG reboot would still technically be a prequel. That's the kind of derivative crap that should stay in Enterprise and Into Darkness and will only appeal to a Trek audience. Episodes where relationships to established species are changed/subverted will mean nothing to a new audience.

Personally, I'd like to see it set after Voyager in the new timeline to avoid too much of that (are these realities really that different?) but I have a feeling they're gonna want a stong connection to the films so it might just be a new ship during the same era as Kirk (that went in the opposite direction).

None of these options cover what I want to see and what I frankly think will happen: Something new, new crew, new cast, new ship, but set in the new Trek continuity that J.J. Abrams started. Not a reboot of TNG, but new.

Ideally, something set in the prime universe at least a few decades after the end of Voyager. The advances in technology would allow the show to examine science fiction topics more relevant to our contemporary world - transhumanism, singularity, etc.

If it's set in the jj-verse, then it should follow a new ship and a new crew. None of this rebooted TNG nonsense. If they're not going to do something new, they may as well not make the show at all.

Likewise for a brand new reboot ignoring both existing continuities. Call the ship the Enterprise if you like, but there's no need to put a Kirk or a Picard or anyone else we've seen before in the Captain's chair. If it's an alternate timeline, then there should be an alternate crew.

Personally, I'd love it if the next series was the Four Years War...

Its a four year story arc with a big Klingon war as a backdrop, It could plot the fall of Garth of Izar, something the casual viewer will know nothing about, but the hard core fans know is coming.

If rebooted I would like to see connection to original timeline, for example one of the crew members could be from original timeline. That character could be introduced with episode dealing with parallel universe (original timeline). Also cast/crew needs to be charismatic, something that IMHO ST Enterprise crew lacked.

Garth of Izar? Who would be interested in fanwank about that trivial, melodramatic one-off?

For me, I'd like a complete reboot of the series with plot points which have inside humour to the past but not tied to it. Cross over mirror episodes all added for fun.

So long as their not creatively bankrupt and try to retell all the same stories.

If they do it in the nu continuity the (some) old fans are pissed off.

If they do a reboot, all fans are equally pissed off.

I find a reboot almost the most salomonic thing to do...
BTW, where are the news about this show, that were promised in the original press release? Although we know now to some extend WHO is running it, we still know nearly nothing ABOUT the show.

The show is debuting in 11 months. Why would you expect news? They just decided who is running the show. Everything else has to be decided now that Fuller is on board. There is still plenty of time for writing a bible, casting, writing episodes, filming, etc... And CBS never promised anything in terms of news. They said there will be a new show in January. Presumably the casting will leak when people are hired. Beyond that and maybe a promo poster or two there could be no news until the show airs on CBS.

If it is premiering in early 2017, filming is probably going to start in Fall. Pre-Production is probably underway.

Tony Todd says hes on the shortlist for Casting

It’s a year away. They’re not even going to get official cast until, probably, the fourth quarter of the year. And my only concern about it is that it’s going to be that online thing [CBS All Access]; I don’t understand that part. I’ve never done a series regular — I’ve always avoided it because I like playing different characters — but this is one year that we’re looking at some stuff, so I’m sure that we’re going to be popping up and everybody’s going to move on something real soon.

Just saw this.

I think Todd is way off on the timeline of production. They cant air in January 2017 if they finalize casting in late 2016
They can. IIRC, Kate Mulgrew didn't join the cast of VOY until just a few months before it aired on UPN.

It all depends on whether or not CBS does this as a traditional weekly show or releases an entire season at a time like other online original series. If it's a traditional weekly show, then casting and other decisions might not be released until a few months before the premiere. If they do an entire season at a time, then obviously they'll need to have everything in place much earlier to film all the episodes.

I choice option 2.
I like to see a show that is set in the prime universe.
It could be that some time has past 50-100 years after Voyager. Maybe it's easier for the writer if it's further into the future.
I also like to see a new ship/station with a new crew.

I'd love to see Tony Todd on the new show as a regular.

I think they should go with a complete reboot. The franchise doesn't need another rehash. They need to start expanding from their aging fanbase.

That's more a case of broadcast/transmission scheduling (air earlier completed episodes as later ones are still being made, or don't air any episodes until they're all in the can). They tend to still be filmed the same way, though (usually several episodes in various stages of production at the same time).
Only because of a delay. If they plan it correctly, they won't have to do it last minute.
Actually, it's not all that uncommon for actors to be cast only months--if not just weeks--before filming begins. Big budget movies tend to lock down big name stars much earlier though.
