Star Trek 2017's new ship - I am really starting to like Ralph McQuarrie's Enterprise

What style of vessel would you rather have?

  • Used/Industrial - like the Nostromo from Alien

Would this be something people would be okay with (the general shape)?

Specifically, this one (not the one with tiny nacelles that looks like a Star Destroyer):

I dunno, from being a one-time fan of the Enty-E, I think I've really gone off the organic-shape - and would like the next show to have something a bit more NASA like, such as this. Obviously, it could be tweaked a bit in terms of surface detailing, but there is something about the shape and proportions that is compelling.

Or would people rather see something ultra-sculpted like the Enterprise-J?

Someone did an update of the McQuarrie version and posted it in the art forum a few years back...

I saw that when googling for images, and thought it was really nice! The surface detailing is really nice. Makes it look like it could easily be very practical and NASA-like, like something out of Interstellar or Gravity or The Martian.

My only gripe is that they seem to have altered the proportions a bit to make it like his other concept - with a longer wedge shape to the hull, and slightly less oversized-nacelles, which I don't like quite as much personally. In that image where it's coming in to the asteroid dock, it looks quite elegant, I think because of the relative shortness of the secondary hull, and size of the Nacelles - almost like a duck just floating in :)

EDIT:

This is the other McQuarrie design I'm referring to that I don't like so much:

The art one follows it's proportions:

I must say I'm not a fan of all the most recent designs anymore; where everything is like a new model VW (same general shape, slightly different bodywork - thats not how design works in fields like shipbuilding/aerospace/space).

And it's a good thing Star Trek Online is Z-canon, because it's the worst for this:

They even bring back 200-year old ship classes, scale them up, and argue the Federation has a policy like Ford ressurecting the mustang (oh god) - that would be okay except some people actually seem to regard the game as representing the legitimate next stage of the main canon. Faceplam.

If the new series was set in the far future, I think using the J would be pretty cool.

That spindly design isn't exactly practical, but it is intriguing to the eye.

Can you say exactly why you think this is the "worst"? It doesn't closely resemble the TOS ship or the D, but it's fine in its own right. Has a kind of ocean liner look (I mean a classic liner, not those huge bricks they call ships now).

THANK YOU. I love the game to death and play it every day, but I'm most definitely in the vast minority in-game when it comes to just really disliking that design. It's bloated, it's a whale, and it's basically just a souped up Sovereign, which itself is a souped up Intrepid.
