CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Right. Add in travel - convention tickets - the still unexplained automobile - and you get even more
financial benefit.

"What does Axanar need with an auto?"
Sorry, I must have missed this somewhere along the way.

Axanar bought a car with the money they took in from crowdfunding?!? :wtf:

I don't see any way in which safe harbor applies to Axanar; I was just pointing out their attorney has won significant copyright cases with that as the defense.

I was referring to Kickstarter being safe from prosecution over this. Some had suggested that Kickstarter could be named as one of the John Doe's in the suit, and on the hook for damages if/when CBS wins.

Has this ever actually been confirmed?
No. The car thing is a rumor. However, there is a $9163.62 line item in the Annual Report for auto expenses.

And a $6810.45 line item expense for "phone". If you go to the "contact us" section of the Axanar Productions website, there is no phone number listed. So assuming the phone expense is for cell phones, but it isn't clear from the report.

$9,163.62 for "auto". Well its LA, and you need a car, but this is a personal expense NOT a production expense. Unless one believes that they are Uber'ing everyone around...

Sushi is the least of it.

hey, these are professionals, you don't just expect them to walk to work, do you?

I'm guessing that was for all the repairs/maintenance on the vehicles of the main production staff (Alec, Diana, and Terry) and perhaps gas for any trip they could justify as a "business" trip. The same goes for phones - new cells for each and then all cell phone bills paid for the year. It's line items like these that make Alec's claims of living on a "minimum wage" just as disengenous as all his other whiny diatribes. It would be relatively easy to live on 38k if EVERY OTHER personal expense was reclassified as a "business" expense and then paid for with donor money.

Shuttles to and from cons?

Seems like it would fall under transportation instead. Just another bit of sloppiness on their part if that's the case.

Good piece, renting would have saved them $$. Laurel Canyon for instance, is great rental stage they could have used..

They could have even shot some of the feature in James Cawley's studio, flew the actors in, then shot the rest in LA on a rental stage and still would have much more money to put towards the film than they have now. So it's either ignorance, or more likely creating the studio business was always the main goal, with the film being the second goal.

At some point, they became more interested in being celebrities.

I see more evidence of mission creep once the dough started rolling in than planning at the outset to bilk fans, and I don't think there's any way they could have planned all this before the first fundraiser.

They got nearly six times what they asked for the first time. They could have simply made the movie they promised to make.

There was a point Alec talked about in an interview or fundraiser site somewhere, where Alec says his director didn't want to use a fan facility and staff of another production which had been planned, but instead wanted Axanar to have its own studio and paid staff. At that point, Alec said a decision was made to realign the purpose of the second fundraiser retroactively from "pay for the filming" to be "build a studio", and do a third fundraiser for the actual filming.

Now, they could have at that point said, well we shouldn't build permanent assets and pay out monies that wouldn't be in alignment with CBS or what the fans believe this money should be for, what other options might we have? And maybe they had that discussion. But somehow, the decision to make a studio and have paid staff won out.

By Alec's account, it wasn't so much mission creep as a point where a decision was made to change the approach. Of course, who knows what other thinking was going on which isn't in the account. But there it is.

The mission creep may have entered in looking at the possibility of funding a studio and saying hey look all all we could do as a long term business, lets retrofit *that* into the money.
