CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Its already been said, but the way he threw the other fan films under the bus in that interview really was appalling for someone who is always singing the praises of New Voyages and talking about how he's helped other fan films.

His sour relationship with Vic is well documented but the specific calling out of their upcoming fundraiser seems incredibly petty. That said, without knowing any behind the scenes details, I know if I had a fan series I'd be tempted to delay any fundraising while this is going on.

It very much reads like someone who is desperately trying to get himself out of this with anything intact. I do have to wonder what conversations have taken place we're not aware of. For example, whether Alec and co got in touch to offer discontinuing the project. I have to assume it'd be a better option than letting this law suit continue. I have to wonder if CBS is past that and are pushing ahead, backing Alec into a corner.

It wouldn't shock me if some donors are still supportive for other reasons. I don't want to get into someone else's head but this was a financial decision they made, however large or small. A lot of people don't want to be told they screwed up in that area, or they weren't as careful as they claim they were. It can be wrapped up in their sense of themselves as mature, prudent, and competent individuals. If they admit they screwed up, it messes with some of their worldview.

I'm just spitballing here of course - it is far from my area of expertise. But I think a lot of folks just don't want to admit they messed something up.

People bought Star Trek:Nemesis on DVD thus proving that people will spend money on just about anything.

I somehow think Alec won't be getting a Christmas card from Mr Cawley this year... Wonder if he realised just how much that could peeve off a close friend? Especially after Alec repeatedly talked about not working with pro's down on the NV's set in a podcast (he may have used the term amateur but don't quote me, has been a while since I listened to that podcast)

Its all getting a little sad now.

James has been a pioneer and a supporter of the whole community. Watch Alex through him under the bus. What an arse.

It is very telling that Alec feels the need to make snide remarks regarding other Fan Films. It's true what people say. He does believe his own hype. He's making all these comments about how superior Axanar is based on a 20 minute documentary style film. Let's be honest. It's not a showcase of Alec's or his teams skill. It's almost purely a showcase of Tobias Richter's.

First rule of being a life guard, a drowning person will climb up over the person trying to help them just to get one more breath, even if it means drowning the person helping them.

C&D orders don't cost as much as trials.

But imagine if they have to send 10,000 a week. Because that's what you'd need, because that's how often technical copyright infringement happens.

Putting the actual cost aside, companies want selective enforcement. Plain and simple. They don't like being forced to litigate, particularly when something is not really a threat.

And going after people versus losing control over your franchise?

Of course, and that's my point. They don't want youtube clips and fan fiction on some 8th grader's facebook page to determine their control of their own property. If copyright were to become like trademark, that's what would happen. Any infringement-- no matter how minor-- could potentially hurt their ability to control their own property.

I'm honestly surprised that Peters hasn't tried to bully the TrekBBS into deleting this thread.
