There's something oddly familiar about Star Trek Beyond's USS Franklin.

Don't know about any of you, but the similarity made me smile.

Something about the angles plus the "feathering" on the saucer just screams "Romulan." I can't imagine that was intentional, though.

Is there a larger pic? Trying to read the ship name in front of the bridge.

    Romulan. Totally Romulan.

K, lets take this by the numbers.

The Federation knows from Nero and Spock that Vulcans and Romulans are almost the same. A Vulcan annexation of Romulus is probably the only way for their species to continue. Force Logic on them, and maybe even make them forget that they were every Romulans... Although why take an empire 7 times the size of the Federation when all they need is genetic diversity?

    1. Buy babies/orphans from the Romulans above(ish) board. I can imagine that there would be millions of unwanted children in the Rommulan Star Empire put up for adoption, that the Vulcans would be more than happy to turn into Vulcans.

    2. Abduct, probe, release. Clone the crap out of the Romulans while they're unawares until the clones have been interbred with enough surviving vulcans that you're not left with problems down the line.

    (Distracted)

    Industrial espionage.

Why wouldn't the Federation steal advanced Romulan tech that they needed if they could?

That's exactly what Kirk Prime did when they got scared enough of Cloaking technology.

All is fair in love and war.

Looks like a deflated frisbee with nacelles.

Looks more like a Loknar class to me...

I think at "feathering" are really clamps.

    The bridge can eject.

Thanks, 22 Stars and JohnD - I eventually caught up. :)

The ship's not that impressive, but that may partly be due to the lighting making it look flat. Might look better in movement.

I would like to show my support for this statement, though I've been told off for having an (admittedly quite negative) opinion about the NuTrek films.

I think they are really jacks. The bridge can elevate.

I mean, it has to, if the helmsman is to be able to see past the forward rim of the saucer, through that bright white window that in the picture is deep down the dorsal trench of the saucer.

It's a curious combination: the new movies force us to think for the first time that starships would have windshields, and then they put them where no windshield can work...

Incidentally, if that is a windshield, and the dots on the saucer rim are portholes, the Franklin could probably be carried inside the shuttlebay of NX-01 with minimal violence. We're not looking at a tall ship here.

If the ship is really that small, it's sensor array/deflector is probably tiny to nonexistent, which is why they have a window rather than a monitor up front.

Also, window and not some kind of flatscreen tv like we're used to might suggest that ship is sublight, and possibly even subimpulse is if Impulse speeds are large fractions of the speed of light.

There are only so many things they can do with a saucer and two nacelles. There are bound to be similarities between different classes of ship.

There's nothing wrong with having a negative opinion of the NuTrek films, as long as you're not making shit up that isn't remotely true to justify your hate of them (Not saying you personally, but I've seen far too much of that kind of thing from the haters.)

Actually this ship can only be seen as a loknar class. Finally a sign they are returning to real trek.

It channels the NX-01 a little bit. But as others have said it really resembles a Loknar class ship from one of the tabletop games and fan ships.

By all reports there is at least one other ship we have not seen of been teased with yet. Eaglemoss mentioned that they had plans for 3 Star Trek Beyond ships.
