Anyone else raising little Trekkies?

My daughter is three, and it's awesome because she's a geek like me and my wife. She loves superheroes. We'll skim Youtube on the Roku and she'll be like, "Oh, daddy, it's Batman!". We go to the park and she has to play Superman while I get to be Wonder Woman.

We went to Comicon and she got to pose in a big Star Wars setup with lots of cosplay folk. Ever since then she asks, usually three times a day, to be Khan Cholo (Han Solo) and for me to be Chewbacca. I say, "Sure" and she says, "Talk with your mouth, Chewbacca" because I'm only allowed to make wookiee noises during that game.

Her other favorite game? "You're Jayne and I'm Mal. I'm gonna put you in jail, Jayne!"

We hadn't introduced her to Star Trek much, just because it's a bit more slow-paced. The other night we're watching one of the Voyagers that starts out on the holodeck. She asks "What are you watching?" and we respond "Star Trek." Immediately, "That not Star Trek! There's no spaceship!"

Last night I had her watch an acapella rendition of the TNG theme music. She loved it. I told her that my favorite character from Star Trek was Mr. Spock, and showed her the Vulcan salute. She's spent the whole day trying to do it. She said that she wants to meet Spock so he can show her how and I got misty-eyed.

Does anyone else have young fans?

Well, he's 18 now, but yes. The first day back from hospital after his birth I got up with him and sat cross legged in front of the TV and showed him Star Wars.

He's into Trek, Who, Marvel and DC (I don't get the DC !) stuff and (why ?) Transformers.

He's getting ready for university and wants to be a physicist. I'm pretty sure I raised a nerd...

Already did. :) Daughter is the only one that is a 'real' Star Trek fan though. She especially loves Voyager. My two sons like ST but more in a casual sort of way.

I've noticed from reading on here and Reddit that most prefer Voyager to other Trek shows when they're young. I wonder why that is.

My children are all grown up or as I like to call them 'semi-grown up'. ;) She still likes it mostly because Voyager was her 'first' Star Trek show and Captain Janeway is her favorite Captain.

My daughter and I went to several conventions when she was young. When she was 11, I took her to the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas, and we had a blast!

She's grown up now, and she's generally moved on to other things, but she still enjoys TNG. The last time she was home she kept playing that stupid "Captain's Control" song! :scream:

My son is 13, and we are currently going through a total watch on TNG. We're almost at the end of Season 5. Voyager is next.

It is great to share things with your kids that they really enjoy too.

:techman:

My son loved watching me play Star Trek Online at the age of 4. I then made it part his reward chart to get gaming time. I created a character on my account that he was to use which was 4 years ago now!

He now has his own account that he can only play when I sign him in and is still linked to gaining minutes from his reward chart.

We're also watching DS9 together, we've got to season 3 so far.

This April I am taking him to his frist convention called First Contact Day here in the UK - got a weekend pass for us both so we're going to have a father & son weekend away. He's really excited - he's even got a costume that a friend of mine gave him from when he was my son's age.

My son lso keeps trying to teach my wife how to do the Vulcan salute!

At school he plays "Star Trek" with his friends, some of them are the Federation and they chase the others who are "Klingons" going "pew, pew, pew"... when I heard he was doing that, I said, you've watched the JJ film too many times... the poor thing was confused at that! :)

My sister's kids (pre-teen boys) are in a different country, but I am trying to remotely indoctrinate them. Like all kids they like Star Wars, but I am hoping to get them into something a little more "selective". ;)

They like comics and they've seen the Nu movies (one of them anyway), so I got them the comics spun off from the Nu movies. More recently I gave them a boxset of the TNG movies (which look much more modern than the TOS movies). I warned my sister that INS in particular was bad, but on reflection they are probably of an age to enjoy the silliness of INS more than the gloomy angst of NEM. Either way, they will be among the few people their age to know who Captain Picard is!

I decided to spare my son the astigmatism.

Some tiny blond girl fluttering her 17 year old eyelashes lured him in any way.

....Star Trek may have had a minor influence for Ezri. Just a bit :p

We don't push anything on the kids, but they obviously get influenced by us so there's a lot of inherited interests. All the Trek toys I had as a kid (minus the expensive ones :p) have been handed out to them by demand.

Never thought I'd see the day when kids are arguing over who gets to keep the Stargazer micromachine....

My wife wanted to name our daughter "Guinan", but I just couldn't pull the trigger.

I've succeeded with my son, who is 22 now - but so far have failed with my daughter's son who is 9 and cares only about Minecraft and the Mario Bros.

My son is 5 and I can't even get him to watch Star Wars yet. I'm thinking of watching Episode 1 to see if kids really do relate to Jar Jar Binks more.

Although I do watch TNG once in a while and he does get curious about it. Asks questions about where are they and where are they flying to. But I think Star Trek is still over his head at this point.

Only Ezri and Ziyal made the list with the ex Mrs T. The deal was she'd get to pick the boys name, I'd pick the girls. I won :p Though a large part of the process was ensuring there was a real-world connection in there as well. Makes sense as my middle name (more commonly used) comes from a Starfleet captain.

Mine was going to be a 'Kira' but turned out to be a 'Samuel'.

Kira's a good name as well! Not sure why that never occured to us (maybe it did, I'm told I don't listen enough :p)

Second time round (with the new Mrs T) we had Jadzia on the list, but only to match Ezri. Neither of us expected a boy.... we were not prepared. Took us a week to think of something :/

I only know about Minecraft due to enthusiastic bursts of information, given to me at such a high speed that I don't even have time to nod and smile :(

A friend of mine has two young boys. They already love superheroes, namely Spiderman and Wolverine. Maybe Star Trek wouldn't be that much of a stretch?

I didn't think my daughter would like this sort of stuff, but she does. She wanted to cosplay at the second comicon that we took her to see. SHe ended up going as Doc McStuffins the first day and Pikachu the second.
