What are you reading?

I'm enjoying The Long Mars so much more than the last one, it seems much more focused. Slightly perturbed at such a blatant rip off/homage to Space Seed however!

A book recommended by my local librarian: Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel. I normally stay far, far away from dystopian stories, but I trust this librarian's judgment, and she was right -- I really liked it.

A book I'd previously abandoned: Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn. I should've left it in its abandoned state. ;)

Never read the book, but I did watch the movie and was mad that I spent time on it. The ending is so stupid. I just couldn't believe she would willingly put herself in that situation, which made the entire story lose credibility.

^ I thought the story lost credibility way earlier than that! I didn't like the ending, but it wasn't totally inconsistent with her previous behavior. Maybe the movie didn't include enough past history to show that.

^^ Now there's a modern-day classic. :bolian:

Assuming it's still considered modern. That was a pretty long time ago, now that I think of it. :rommie:

Yeah, maybe. In the movie at least, I felt it came way out of the left field. Then again, I found myself not caring enough to really notice any of those possible details...

The Stand is something I should really go back to. I did start reading it a long time ago and just gave up, whether I just didn't have the patience or whether it just didn't grab me I don't know. I do have an odd kind of relationship with King's work. I love his short stories but many of the novels I've read/tried to read leave me cold for some reason, although having said that I loved his JFK/Time travel book

I'm now reading The Jakarta Pandemic. The Stand was published in 1978 and re-released in 1990, so it is a bit dated. However, it's still an enjoyable read.
