Hailee Steinfeld and Casting Ideas/Speculations in Future nuTrek Films

My latest Eurasian/Hapa crush - celeb-wise - is Hailee Steinfeld and I couldn't help but wonder if she would make an interesting Saavik in future movies since she seems to have a Kirstie Alley look thing going on in a few photos that I've seen her in.

Granted, the movies are taking bits of lore from the franchise in previous years and creating new stories (yes, stories can used loosely in some aspects) and we never know who is going to be added or acknowledged. It seems like Carol Marcus is gone from the 3rd film, at least from the trailers (We had no indication that Nimoy was showing up for STID, at least I didn't, so I was surprised...in a bad way...that he showed up for that sequel).

We also don't know how the writers and director will handle Spock's relationship with Uhura. We still may (or may not) see Christine Chapel, whom we 'heard' on the Enterprise in the 2009 film, but we never saw. Also, the addition of Saavik will create another love interest for Spock...things that actually may bog down any progress for the actual story; you can shoehorn but so many characters in and even if they aren't shoehorned, they should serve the story.

I always thought that Katie Holmes had a slight resemblance to Terry Ferrell, or at least Holmes, reminds me of that DS9 actress. Since she is a bit mature, Holmes, I wouldn't mind seeing her as a feature film version of the lovely host Jadzia Dax. (I just had a thought about Jason Momoa as a different version of Worf, but the writing and direction would really have to work with Momoa to make him look good).

I'm still wondering how many films we're going to get out of this cast. A trilogy? Four, five, maybe even six!?

Hailee Steinfeld as Saavik would be pretty cool though, I like it. Good casting.

Thanks, Shalashaska, for your reply.

I think it's all boxoffice. If #3 does well and audience reaction is positive, we may see another with the nuTOS crew.

I know there are some fans who will probably be asking about TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT...etc. So Paramount may (or could) take some inspiration from Disney and do one-off or side stories based around those other properties...or create original characters and situations within the nuTOS era.

We shall see.

I'd be fairly disappointed with only three TBH. I'm not a massive fan of the reboot films, but I did enjoy ST09. I did not like Into Darkness very much at all though. Fun action, disliked everything else. Despite that, I think the cast and new crew have a lot of potential still untapped and still have a few more good Trek films left in them.

Just like the first two seasons of every Trek series are usually the worst, I'm expecting Beyond to be better than the first two films with Lin/Pegg working on it this time rather than the deadly trio of Orci/Kurtzman/Lindelof.

If Lin/Pegg do a good job, I'd love to see them come back and do some more nuTOS films. They're fans of TOS, and while the trailer was disappointing IMO, I have confidence in them to put out a good movie.

There's really no other option. A TNG reboot franchise probably wouldn't work as well considering no one really wants or needs to see their origins or them re-casted unlike the TOS characters, and their feature films were of a much lower quality than the TOS films. DS9, Voyager and Enterprise are not as well-regarded or anywhere near as mainstream as TOS and TNG were so I doubt they get ever get feature films.

Yeah, TNG will really have to be changed for the big screen (e.g. action, quicker pace, better writing - all on a bigger level than the original TNG films). Unlike the series, the hypothetical nuTNG will really have to have a connection to the nuTOS era so the casual audience won't be confused or lose interest. (Sometimes, we have to spoon feed the crowd!) This will be the case for any other feature film Trek spinoff.

Not to mention, Star Wars has returned, in a big way. ;) I'm sure Paramount wants some of that audience and that audience money. (It's the 1970s all over again. The difference is: Audiences already know about Trek and Wars and there are other big franchises out there, including Disney's and DC's and Fox's superhero universe(s).

Yep, Beyond has to go beyond expectations.

Re: Hailee Steinfeld and Casting Ideas/Speculations in Future nuTrek F

Indeed, Hailee Seinfeld is a great actress! Where the hell has she been the last few years? It's been a long time since I last saw a movie with year. What has she done in the last few years....?

@Shalashaska:
Pine and Quinto have already signed up for a fourth part. And the rest of the main casts' actors aren't drowning in movie work either (except Simon Pegg, but given his status as a Trekkie/writer he will most likely be back). It's pretty much impossible for 'Beyond' to bomb that hard to not grant us another sequel. It's only a matter of if/how much Beyond will exceed/underperfom expectations how big of a budget they will get for nuTrek4. After that the stage is open for a change in the cast, with another sequel, but maybe without the whole old gang.

I'm expecting 5 nuTrek movies. After that either a new reboot, or a "sequel" with new actors in the same roles. Or a prequel, covering more of Kirk and Spock's academy days (even though that has already partially been done in 09)

Re: Hailee Steinfeld and Casting Ideas/Speculations in Future nuTrek F

Might be too old - both the Saavik origins I've read had her being found by Spock during the 5-year-mission, as a feral child living on an abandoned Romulan colony world.

Nothing to stop them chucking that out and having them bump into her as an adult on the 5YM, though

Chekov is older than he should be, and probably Uhura as well. As long as she was born after 2233, it seems like anything's fair game.

Well, in one of the comics runs where they chronicled a five year mission after TMP(Literally starting from Kirk's "Thattaway") leading into TWOK, Spock found Saavik as a young teenager I believe. It's been awhile since I read it.

But yeah, in the NuMovies anything is possible. Saavik could show up very easily.

I just want to know where they'll find George and Gracie this time.

This.

It's a new timeline so things can be shifted.

The first film had Chris Pike already know the nuTOS crew, when in the 'other' timeline he never did. Not to mention, he was convalescent due to heavy scarring from a previous mission. (I don't think he formally met Kirk until the Talos IV mission with Kirkprise came up. Someone correct me if I'm wrong). Of course, Pike didn't die in that other timeline...as he did in STID. In the 'other' timeline he lived, albeit within an illusion of his younger self.

So Saavik can be introduced earlier than what we previously saw.

To bring in another property: The FOX show Gotham seems to be playing around with timelines or characters. For instance: All of Batman's villains seem to come across one another, as well as Bruce Wayne, in one way or another. And Jim Gordon looks to have his daughter, Barbara, with another woman who is not similarly named. Unless the writers/producers are keeping to what we know in the comics.

I just want to know where they'll find George and Gracie this time.

On a distant and dying M-class world. Somehow (and for some reason) the last two alien mammals have to be brought to Earth.

nuKirk: Are you wearing your hair differently, Lieutenant?

nuSaavik: It's still regulation, Captain.

lol..

I wonder if this hypothetical version can be the canonized Romulan/Vulcan version? What if her insertion into the story has something to do with Nero from the 2009 film?

Since 2013 she's made about a dozen movies (including Ender's Game, Pitch Perfect 2, Romeo & Juliet, 3 Days to Kill, and Begin Again), narrated a JFK TV documentary, and released a full-length pop album followed by a brief tour. Seems like a pretty active and well-rounded career for a nineteen year old.

And how will they deal with the six people from the (different) future who want George and Gracie too.

I must track down that JFK TV documentary.
