The Original Outline for "The Cage" With Gene's Handwritten Notes

Not sure what the overall purpose of this would be, but it must've been written around the airing of "The Man Trap" since that was when the "Space, the final frontier" narration was hastily written. It also doesn't look like a de Forest Research memo, but maybe Harvey would better recognize the tells.

It's definitely not from de Forest Research. I've read hundreds of de Forest Research memos (including many for projects other than Star Trek; I came close to writing a dissertation about their role in Hollywood) from projects made as early as 1964 and as late as 1988, and they are all formatted the same, specific way.

This one is puzzling; was it definitely written by Roddenberry? It doesn't seem like his writing style, and it refers to "Gene Roddenberry" in the last paragraph. Nothing against Roddenberry.com, but they have misidentified the source of memos before.

They also seem to be comparing WNMHGB to The Cage, not to the series to follow. It also seems to be referring to both the filmed episode and the outline / script ("100 women on board").

I get the feeling that this memo is from August or September of 1966, based on "space, the final frontier..." and other allusions to the series proper. Hard to say who wrote this one for sure, as it's not a traditional memo -- more like rough notes that have been dictated and typed later. I think Maurice's read as to why the memo was written is correct.

They said there's an extended document for that letter on the Roddenberry.com site, but I still have yet to see it appear on there.

Here ya go: http://www.roddenberry.com/star-trek-50/Sales-Status-of-Star-Trek.pdf

Thanks!

How were you able to find it? When I open the landing page on the Roddenberry site, I don't see any other documents beyond the two from January 1st. Is there a toggle arrow or something that's not loading on my computer?

EDIT: Looks like the Jan 4th document shows up when I view the page in Firefox, rather than Chrome. Bizarre...

That's an interesting document. Nice to see some background context for the "too cerebral" stuff. And it appears, from this document, that "The Cage" was shown to at least two test audiences with a third test to come. Nice to see that bit of lore corroborated.

Look forward to future revelations.

After reading Gene's words I do hope that whatever they find on these disks will not be filmed but rather printed. Gene was a good writer. Thanks for the link. You've just made this Roddenberry fan's day!

And... gone.

It's still coming up for me.

Looks like today's post is Majel's script for "The Cage," but the extended document hasn't appeared on the Roddenberry site as yet.

This link isn't working for me.

I've heard that "too cerebral" was really a veiled way of saying that the story touched a little too much on sexuality. Did this document have notes along those lines?

If that's the case, then I think it's interesting that television science fiction wasn't quite ready for the kind of thing that literary SF had already been exploring for quite some time (as is usually the case right up til today).

You sure it's not cached? I have tried it in two different browsers and get 404 errors each time.

Seems they're uploading documents on there and obliterating the previously published ones. Today's is Majel's copy of "The Cage" script.
