New bookish stuff, and a few things we already knew, in this post:
http://www.startrek.com/article/2016-preview-upcoming-trek-themed-products

From Harper Collins (not Simon & Schuster): an updated "The Star Trek Encyclopedia", by Michael Okuda & Denise Okuda

And three from Penguin Books/Price Stern Sloa, seemingly skewed to a young audience:

"Star Trek: Mad Libs" by Eric Luper

"Starfleet Logbook" by Jake Black

"What Would Captain Kirk Do?" by Brandon T. Snider.

Therin Thanks for posting these new Star trek 50th anniversary book s article.I'm so glad there's going to be a new Updated Star Trek Encyclopedia at long last it's long overdue.:)

So does that mean that Pocket only has the rights to novels? I thought they did all of the books.

I think they still retain "official" rights, or at least first refusal? When a non-fiction book has come along, in recent years, Simon & Schuster have often had some kind of shared interest with the other publishers (such as Cider Mill, Abrams, Insight Editions, Titan, Andrews McMeel, and now, seemingly, HarperCollins and Penguin Random House).

Other books are often proudly "unauthorized", and don't go through the typical CBS Consumer Products vetting process, such as the Bob Greenberger "Complete Unauthorized History".

Some books have had a more colourful past. Bjo Trimble's first "Star Trek Concordance" was an unauthorized fanzine, then an authorized Ballantine Books publication in 1977 - but the 1995 revised edition was unauthorized but published professionally by the now-defunct Citadel Press.

Oh, yeah I know about unauthorized books. I was just surprised to see big names like HarperCollins and Penguin attached to Trek books. So does that HC and Penguin have some kind of a deal with Pocket then?

Am really looking forward to having an updated edition of the Encyclopedia!

One of the most anticipated items on my wish list really.

Same here, even with Memory Alpha having everything the Encyclopedia has/had and more. The binding on my original Encyclopedia fell apart years and years ago from reading it so much. :p

Me too, although I still wish they were including TAS.

Though when they first announced the new version of the Encyclopedia, I was glad that it would pretty much be a definitive work, with the unfortunate exceptions of TAS and (probably) Beyond... and then they went and announced a new series!

Maybe we get lucky and the Encyclopedia sells so well that they'll do another version after the end of Series VII, this time with TAS.

I guess the problem is that the Okudas already had a huge updating job to do, and because previous editions had to be TAS-less (except April, Spock's childhood and ShiKahr), there was little evidence of TAS already there to build upon. and 22 extra episodes of data would represent many more pages, made up of many single sentences scattered through the book. All the TOS character entries would need a TAS update, whereas ignoring TAS allows many TOS entries to stay unrevised.

If the new series takes off, and is set in the JJverse, any new hardcopy Encyclopedia might just reference the Bad Robot output. Clean slate!
