I'm wondering why CBS is asking for a jury trial?
As Maurice speculated upthread, to set legal precedent when it comes to fan productions and their crowdfunding.

Absolutely Right (tm)
GUH, I forgot, technically Viacom owned it all 'till they split the company up, then Star Trek itself was split between Paramount for the movies, and CBS for the TV series, same with merch rights as well, as far as I can tell.
I think CBS owns it all and licenses rights to Paramount. Which is where they come in as Axanar was planning on using Robau and Abramsverse ship designs.
terrible news for SOME trek fans
Yes it is.
what trek fans it it not bad news for ?
Most all fans.

I wonder if CBS chose to do this this week, the slowest news week of the year and after TFA's hype dies down so they could send a message to everyone else.

The damages are an aside I would think as any win will completely sink Axanar... Well the legal fees alone will do that.
I hope they find a way to appease or defeat CBS and go ahead with production and release. It'll be interesting to see how this goes.
Good luck, Alex & team.
Sorry JuanBolio, but Alec and company crossed a line with CBS, and since CBS owns the rights to Star Trek, that will be all she wrote. This is a real kick in the teeth to fans. I for one was awaiting Axanar with baited breath - its the first fan production I've really gotten into. I hope they find a way to appease or defeat CBS and go ahead with production and release. What happens if they continue to ignore CBS? Going forward with fundraising, perks and coffee? The Indiegogo page is still up.
