Star Wars: The Force Awakens Discussion (HERE THERE BE SPOILERS)

I for one wasn't all that sold on the idea of Ewan McGregor as young Obi-Wan. Before the cast of Episode I was announced I think I'd seen him in just one other film (Trainspotting) and wasn't very familiar with him, so naturally the idea of this new guy stepping into the role made legendary by Sir Alec Guinness wasn't the most exciting one.

I saw him in Trainspotting (a masterpiece, IMO), and another one of Danny Boyle's early gems called Shallow Grave. He was pretty great in both, and I was really anxious to see how he does in Star Wars. It was kinda disappointing that his role in TPM wasn't more prominent, but I think he really shined in other two.

Honestly, I'd be way more excited about a standalone Obi-Wan movie starting Ewan.

The movie is a retread and close to plagiarism. I think Lucas deserves a writing credit for the basic story foundation.

Just as soon as Akira Kurosawa gets his credit in A New Hope.

You mean there was a death star that destroyed planets in Kurosawas film. A droid had a hidden message stored inside him. There was a xwing attack at the end of the movie. Han Solo had to set detonators up to destroy the shields of the death star?

Have you ever seen The Hidden Fortress? I'd always heard that Lucas had been inspired by it, but when a friend showed it to me, I was flabbergasted by just how much he'd cribbed.

I find it funny that "hidden fortress" is the phrase which Motti is in the process of blurting out when Vader chokes him.

I predict Rogue One will do half the business as TFA. I think it's going to be awesome, but it doesn't star any of the main characters and that's an uphill battle. Just look at the box office of the Clone Wars movie It only did $68 million international, compared to ROTS three years earlier which did $849m.

(yes, animation is a huge step down in public awareness)

It obviously won't be nearly as huge, but I still think Rogue One will do quite well. It's the first standalone SW film there's ever been, and supposedly done in a totally different and edgier style than we've ever seen. Both of which I think audiences will find really cool and intriguing.

And then of course you throw in the original and iconic Death Star and the likely appearance of a certain Dark Lord of the Sith...

Instead, we ended up with a cartoon movie and series.... a very good cartoon, but not what was initially expected.

I wouldn't mind a little dark edginess in Star Wars, like in the earlier Dark Horse comics.

No, the Dark Times. Don't worry, I have it on good authority that we'll be getting it in 2009. They've got a hundred scripts, and writers lined up, but the economics are different for TV, blah blah blah...

The whole thing reminded me of an episode of The Office.

It's obviously not going to be some violent and bloody Rambo type thing, but from everything I've seen and read it's still going to feel very different from the typical SW movie.

They did say there were going to go for a more World War II invasion at Normandy feel for Rogue One. Saving Private Ryan feel I think.

Its going to show the original Death Star possibly even a recreated interior, its going to show old style x-wings, darth vader, maybe boba fett, old style star destroyers/tie fighters etc. It will have everything fans have been waiting for. I really think it won't be straying from the OT style of movies. The prequels taught us that even if they are good(ROTS) fans want old style star wars.

I disagree. While I would agree that TPM and AOTC stunk ROTS actually got it right. The special effects were much improved. The movie had nice world building. Anakin going insane to the dark side was also well done. Why was it a mess?
