CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

This goes back to my point of the ego of a person. When you try to out do other fan films, or not even call your self a fan film, then you are looking to self destruct.

Alec wanted to make a "Fan Film" but not do the think to keep it alive.

Set a budget that is not pass a damn $1,000,000
Find a location that is nice, but not 15k a month.

Make sure you have all the elements to build sets.. in a short time. Hell, a studio has what 2 maybe 3 weeks for sets. (Please correct me)

All the trips to conventions. Hiring of friend and GirlFriend...etc..etc

You are put yourself in a spot for CBS to come after you.

NV started in a Church...over time they find a better location, HELL its only now they are adding new medical sets..after what 10 years....

Sorry I do not feel sorry for Alec, but I do for the people who put in the hours.

Again I hate that Alec and others have brought in NV and other fan films into this. They took years to make sure things are done right. So CBS would not come down on them.

But Alec had to try to show a major studio who is boss, and try to drag down the other FanFilm Productions. Thats is wrong, and I can not understand how people allow that!

Stockholm syndrome.... If a TV preacher raised funds from his church for a for profit venture everyone but the church would go Ape.... Axanerds seem kind of cultish.

This is a little off topic but I had a question. I read somewhere that Alec tried to trademark designs of the ships that were going to appear in Axanar that were original to the production. Was this true?

There are now people throwing money towards Axanar to help them pay for their legal defense. Jesus Christ, that is some hard core delusion. I hate to say that, but seriously, when the IP holder says "sorry kids, you can't play with our ball anymore," you don't try to fight them to get the ball back. It was never yours to begin with. Yeesh!

Alec cause all of this. He made a big deal over superficial crap and not the main purpose of the fan film. The story. It had to do more with out doing other fan films (To get a series) and spending money without thinking what is best for the project.

This is a guy who is an actor playing a role as Captain on the film. He is not directing the film, At the end of the day he is a spokesmen to the project.

The problem is he has been BAN in most trek forums and site because of the way he acts and talks to members. Its not a surprise that the ego destroyed a project that could have been great.

Nowhere in that official statement is there anything that suggests that Axanar has the capacity to defend the charges being brought against them. It's all air.

From the comments section of that same article:

So, either Burnett is not as informed as he was led to believe or he's straight up lying about "everyone" being paid for their work.

Likewise, I'm not sure how Burnett can claim there is no copyright infringement there, when they were shipping IDIC patches to donors:

No NOT all of us have been being paid. I for one wasn't, and a know a few others that haven't been either. I guess you need to be a in state person to get that nugget.

I'm starting to wonder if the funders on these sites are going to end up getting wrapped up in this somehow. I could see them claiming that they're producers.

I seriously wonder what specifically happened to push them over the edge to the legal portion. Was it the studio? Was it comments being made? The actors and challenges with them? Or could it be the comments from reddit?

I just hope we find out soon.

I have no legal experience whatsoever, and so I speak as a layman on a Star Trek board with too much time on his hands when I say I still think the self-funded production studio via exploitation of an IP they didn't own is a part of the whole issue.

I mean, think about it: Renegades, New Voyages, Continues, Excelsior, Hidden Frontier, and tons of other fan productions get along with CBS just fine. What sets Axanar apart? What did they do differently?

Some fans claim quality, and that claim is bullshit, because Axanar has produced nothing other than a 20 minute "Prelude" documentary style film. The last Star Trek film made nearly half a billion dollars. Believe me, CBS doesn't care about your little fan film, unless you've done something to draw their ire.

That's what I'm waiting to find out.

Star Trek: Prelude to Injuction

I don't think I've seen anything that's so unified the fandom. Yeah, you'll have delusional people shouting for a boycott but look at all of us...talking like adults.

I'm proud guys. Group hug.

Unless, of course, this is only the first domino...

As Maurice has pointed out, a lawsuit can take a while to prepare. It sure seems likely that CBS noticed when geek sites started running articles last summer(?) with titles like "The Star Trek Movie We've All Been Waiting For" if not a lot earlier.

There's no real information to be gleaned from blogged recollections of "what the CBS guy said to us when we were alone in a room" - that kind of thing is entirely self-serving.

I'm prou--

Hey, maybe CBS can use their lawsuit winnings to bring DS9 to bluray?

Out of curiosity, do we know when the hearing on an injunction will be held? That proceeding should tell us many things.
