The First Trailer

Enterprise packin' bikes? It's plausible actually.

It just looks daft. Maybe Battlestar 1980 caused me some permanent damage. :scream:

It's not a make or break issue; it's a small footnote. At worst you crumple your face in abject disgust whilst watching the scene and then its over and onto what our crew do best; battling aliens and grappling with moral dilemmas. At best, you find out you're wrong about the bike and the scene works.

And another thing - they lumped a bunch of cynical grumps onto a station and called it "Star Trek". They didn't call it "Star Sittin' in One Spot Bar An Occasional Jaunt". So if they can get away with that being called Star Trek, then this is Trek, even if it's rubbish.

People didn't like the first Star War Trailer either, for pretty much the same reasons (but with an added dose of racism to induce extra despondency over the state of your fellow man.)

Come to think of it, none of the Trek teasers have been great representations of their movies. FC's made out it was a straight Borg invasion flick, TWOK and INS consisted of all the action in the movie, GEN flat out lied and tried to make out Kirk was on the Enterprise-D etc.

In DS9 they did go Star Trekkin'. It's why the wormhole to a brand new quadrant was there, and it's how they stumbled on the Dominion in the first place. They were pretty much in a tie with Picard on the number of first contacts they managed to make (neither had the most).

-Kirk likely brought the bike with him (5 years is a long time and Enterprise is a big ship). The trailer shows Kirk approaching the wreckage of the Enterprise, then leaving on a motorbike.

Or possibly the bike was stowed on another crashed Starfleet ship. That Robert April was a known gearhead!

There are so many comments in this thread that I'm not sure if someone has already posted this.

Simon Pegg's reaction to the trailer:

He says the trailer is very action packed, but there is a lot more to the movie than that. He asks Trek fans to be patient.

Kor

Honestly, that gives me a bit of hope. Because he acknowledges that the trailer is action-packed and that there's a lot more actual Star Trek in the movie, ie at least Pegg recognizes that Trek isn't all about action and 'splosions. Here's to hoping.

His involvement is one of the reasons I am looking forward to Beyond and why I'll give it a chance.

Things like how Kirk became Captain just don't make sense (not to me anyway). .

If you're looking for a realistic command and promotion scturure, Star Trek has never been the place to look.

A lot of those (but not all of them) are movie specific iirc (following way too many series right now).

I think ST's best moments are on TV. The TOS movies never really did much for me, nor the TNG movies -- for different reasons.

If this movie nets us a new TV series, it doesn't wipe the criticisms of the movies away, but then I can live with it.

The gist of it is, there's more to the movie than the action trailer shows.

Are people really this stupid?

Of course there's more to the movie. It is two freaking hours long.

Nice use of "people" to get past the "fan" censor.

But, yeah that anyway.

If M'Sharak/Locutus feel the need to ding me, I don't have a problem. But it still is a question that I had. People (not just fans) leave me scratching my head more and more everyday.

On YouTube someone made a wrath of khan trailer using Beastie Boys Sabotage. I thought it was brilliant, and it actually improved my opinion on this trailer. It also made me look forward to a more serious Star Trek trailer in the future.

I don't think anyone actually believes it is solely composed of action scenes, they're more likely just worried that action scenes are what were chosen to represent the film to audiences in the first teaser, which could indicate the direction the studio wants the film to take. I don't think that's a "stupid" stance to take, only somewhat premature, since trailers (especially teasers) don't always represent an accurate impression of the finished product.

But anyway, beyond that, yeah, let's avoid calling people stupid, even in broadstrokes like that.

How about if just... no one calls any "people" stupid?

I mean... how hard can it be?

When exposed to a given thing, "people" will have differing responses.

Let them. It's normal human behavior. No judgement need be passed.

Based on Pegg's comments, a large part of the film takes place at Starbase Yorktown on a planet in the frontier. So it's possible the motorcycle was found by Kirk at the Starbase.

You know, most posters here seem to assume that 'traditional' Trek fans are the ones mostly criticising the trailer around the rest of the 'net.

However:

There's now a new 'old guard' to consider.

Maybe Captain Janeway needs to violate the temporal / alternate reality prime directive to give the new Captain Kirk a few pointers on dealing with Swarms. :techman:
