Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

But that's par for the course for the initial teaser trailer for just about any movie these days. That's why it's called a teaser.

I guess it's a good thing I don't usually watch these things. If I wasn't invested in Trek, this mess would turn me off.

I think that they rescue the crew and aliens captured by the swarm and leave the planet on board the Franklin. Set course to the next Federation Outpost (Dubai), but are followed by the swarm. They are again attacked, crashland (the scenes filmed in Dubai, where you could see the extras running from the crashed saucer) and the swarm begins attacking the city. Scene from the trailer, where you see starfleet personnel running to the buildings and swarm ships flying around. On the right side of that scene, it looks like the shape of the saucer's rim, probably the two open hatches that were visible in the pictures taken from the building next to the set in Dubai.

Take it from a Westerner who has lived in the Dubai/Abu Dhabi area for 7 years, now...the Swarm HAS taken over Dubai! It is more crowded than 10 Forward on Federation Day.

Okay, I made that last part up, but it is really crowded here in the cities!

The Enterprise gets hammered, but no way does it get destroyed. That would end the five-year mission, which is too much of a downer. I predict the ship is still in orbit around the planet, and at the end of the movie they will return to her and start repairs.
I tend to think she's toast. She loses a nacelle, in another scene we see the saucer going down.

Nacelle - they can stitch that bad boy right back on.

The saucer isn't going down - this is Kirk's POV as his lifepod flies away from the ship.

EDIT: Strike that, I caught a glimpse of the background. Still, how are they going to get off the planet and continue their mission?

Kirk ejects as the saucer is about to crash into some mountains. The next scene shows them approaching the burning wreckage on the ground.

How are they going to continue their mission? Who knows. There's no completed 5 year mission in this universe....

Agreed -- the E is basically shredded. Time for something new.
It's only a flesh wound.

I presume there'll be some sort of timeloop reset to restore the Enterprise. It's either that, they give them an A ship or this will be a nutrek trilogy. My bet is on a time loop reset. They like that sort of thing.

Since the creative staff is new, we have no idea what they like.

The writing credits are... interesting.

I do notice that, with the exception of Mr. Orci, Messieurs Jung, Payne and McKay have a handful of movie and television writing credits, collectively. Payne has no previous credits.

Fresh Talent? No Preconceptions?

I choose to be positive.

Plus, can we assume the Trailer is linear in time? By that I mean, do we "see" it in the chronology they cut it in, or could it be out of time order? If that makes sense?

I wonder if this whole movie will be on this planet or if it will be like Into Darkness where the prologue has them on another off-world mission before them traveling to the graveyard of ships planet.

They build a new ship?

Crazy talk, I know.

I just hope that they take full advantage of it and don't just hit the reset button.

After my initial reaction, i'm mellowing to what's depicted in the trailer.

Part of me kinda wishes they hadn't given the death of the enterprise away, again, though.

Well, they would be following in good Trek form if they do hit the reset button ;)

Honestly, I'm more curious as to how it happens rather than that it happens. That's more interesting fodder for my imagination.

Of course, that is, assuming they did give away the death of the Enterprise. What we saw in the Trailer could have been a number of things...yes? :techman:

Where the hell does Kirk get a motorbike? They'd better have a good reason for that.
I'll bet you any money you like Kirk took it with him on the 5 year mission to 'remind him of home' or some such bullshit (remember he first saw the Enterprise on a motorbike). There'll be a scene of him cleaning or working on it, probably with McCoy who will say something like "why'd you bring that thing, anyway?"

That's almost exactly what I speculated in another thread - though without the attitude. ;)

Regarding the motorbike, I can see how it fits into NuTrek. In ST09 we saw Kirk in a hotrod and on a bike (a different bike; the bike in the trailer seems like an older type). And going on a five-year mission, crew are probably entitled to bring some personal items to keep them sane on the journey. Kirk brings along his bike, for sentimental reasons. Spock might bring along his Vulcan lyre.

I can imagine McCoy ribbing him about the bike - "What century are you from? It's a piece of junk!"
Then, when they are on the planet, Kirk recovers the bike from the wreckage. He turns up on it to rescue McCoy, and gives him that ironic look that is classic Kirk. "Need a ride?"

That also explains why they built the Enterprise to be so huge.

It's so that Kirk can install a dirt track somewhere in there.

:rommie:
