The First Trailer

Mark my words Bob Orci’s film would have been 1000x better and had roles for William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy to celebrate the 50th Anniversary.

I'll take a movie directed by the guy who made two of the [mindless] heist-action films in history over a first-time director with a 9/11 conspiracy fetish, thank you.
You have a point there.

And I have some bad news for you about Nimoy.
Yeah, the budget would be enormous.

Atrocious. No other word for it. RIP Star Trek.
Please, please tell us why.
Why? So half of you can line up to tell me what a scumbag I am for not liking what I'm seeing?

I don't want Guardians of the Galaxy meets Fast & Furious. It's that simple. That's what this trailer sells to me....with maybe a bit if Mission Impossible thrown in the mix.

If the marketing is rubbish and the movie ultimately has the thought provoking qualities of past Trek (and isn't as vapid as Into Darkness) then fine, I'll ultimately be pleased. I'm cool with that. But I think the chances of that are pretty slim based both on who is writing it (albeit admittedly an upgrade on Orci) and the fact that the studio ordered that it is "less Star Treky" then the previous two, which were themselves only superficially "Star Treky" with their fan winks, and more like GOTG. The trailer is entirely consistent with that direction, as is Lin's involvement.

That's my take on the trailer. I don't like what I see. I hope the finished product is better than the trailer. That's my opinion, I don't need to be told why I am wrong or convinced to change my mind, nor am I interested in a long discussion about why I should. End of.

There's nothing but wisecracks, FX and 'a' ship crashed in a quarry that is obvious in the trailer. .

Wrong.

There's a premise here that's more interesting than most of the Trek movies.

And BTW, Lin is a more talented director than any previous Trek Helmer other than Wise, whose tastes were those of a very different era.

This will likely get non-fans to go see it. Fans will go anyway. They'll lie then go anyway.

After Insurrection and Nemesis I'm frankly amazed they were able to keep making Star Trek movies - let alone 3 more.

I'll say this. I think the content of what we see in the film looks absolutely fine (and no, there's nothing "Unlike" Star Trek about it.) I think the trailer itself is maybe what's causing problems for some people. As a matter of I think it's just slightly in cohesive (or something similar.) I think when the full trailer comes out down the line that you'll see some opinions shift.

Wil Wheaton implied on his Twitter that it looked like a Generic Sci-Fi Action film with Trek uniforms. Well, so did most Trek film trailers. The only reason they were "familiar" to Trekkies then is because they kept following the same formulas and featured an ensemble cast of people that people already associated with Star Trek.

However, I think it's absolutely 110% silly to start casting a movie out because of a 1 minute trailer.

The studio wants you to go see a film based on the trailer. So I think not wanting to see a film based on the trailer is entirely legitimate.

I'll be seeing it either way. ;)

I decided to watch a trailer for TMP. It's about 95% action scenes ( pretty much every one in the film) and gives little indication what the film is about. but tries to make it seem actiony with red alerts, explosions and weapons fire.

:guffaw:

Who exactly was more talented? Meyer? Nimoy? Shatner? Carson? Frakes? Baird? No exactly a Hall of Fame line up there.
Yes, Meyer is absolutely more talented. He knows how to make Trek with heart, soul and brains.

I'd argue Abrams is more talented as well, irrespective of my dislike for Into Darkness.

Of course, if the question was "who is the best action director", then Lin might have a run at it. But then it speaks volumes to me about the state of fandom that people are hailing a driving franchise action director as the best man for the job. Outside of Better Luck Tomorrow, and setting aside the obviously formulaic Furious series, Lin's directorial efforts have been average at best. While Abrams might not understand Trek, his career history is leagues beyond Lin's.

Wasn't the whole point of the Abrams films to get non fans to go? I thought he did a great job of doing that with ST 09 and the box office for Into Darkness improved on that fllm.

On the other hand the trailer for Star Trek Beyond is way over the top and hints that the series is going in a "Guardians of the Galaxy" direction as the suits at the studio demanded.

Abrams made ST relevant again (and profitable again) by updating the franchise for the modern audience. I am not one of those people demanding that they bring back Nick Meyer and make ST films like they did in the 80's.....That said at what point does Star Trek cease being Star Trek and simply become just another dumb action movie?

Abrams did a great job of walking that line. From the looks of this trailer (and i fully understand it's simply a two minute teaser trailer) Lin has crossed that line and made something that resembles Fast + Furious meets Guardians of the Galaxy. That was my fear from the moment I heard they chose him as director.

Very unimpressed with the trailer and the general direction they seem to be taking Star Trek.
