The First Trailer

I don't want to be that guy but I have to be honest in my reactions... What the f*** did they do to Star Trek!?

Made it a great deal less pompous and a little more entertaining.

A BIG +1!

That was the thing I missed the most during the Berman years. So much of Star Trek was just dry and simply not entertaining.

Well, having just watched the trailer for "Star Trek: Fast & Beyond Furious" all I can say is .... uhm.... motorcycles? Really? WTF??

That was exactly the moment I tuned out TBH. I just thought "This is Max Max".

I've never liked Mad Max.

My first reaction was one of shock. Could it be there was too much action even for me? However, upon further viewings it really has my interest because I really cannot figure what is going on!

As I think more about it....we may be getting something we never had...a big budget TOS Exploration movie!

What is the deal with the motorcycle? Have they outlawed the wheel in the future? I had the same "what the fuck?" reaction to people criticizing the Argo in Nemesis.

Shows exactly what you know...
And straight after being given the directing job, Lin was really going to go running around telling everyone that he'd never watched Star Trek before and knew nothing about the show. . .

Repeating bullshit doesn't make the bullshit any less bullshit.

There's nothing in that trailer that tells me it's a trailer for a Star Trek film.

Did you miss the Enterprise, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, and Scotty?

It's tough to tell too much from a trailer like that in terms of plot and tone of the film - it's laughable that people think they know anything from that quick minute and thirty seconds - but it definitely made me want to see more. Visually it looks great.

So you're calling the man a liar. Boy, "fandom" sure does sink low when it doesn't get what it wants.

I'm saying he was never going to fess up to knowing nothing about Trek, if that was the case. Judging by the trailer, he knew nothing about Trek and still doesn't.

He was? Guess I missed that.

What defines a "Star Trek film"? Trek is a big tent concept. A lot of things can be and are Star Trek.

I've been watching Star Trek since 1975 and I love this trailer. It screams TOS to me.

And what in a trailer constitutes that it's a "Star Trek" film?

it's hard to get a sense of a movie from a trailer. Trailers are designed to market films, not tell the "truth" about them. Heck, the trailer for Star Trek VI made that look like an all-out action film, and that movie was one of the slowest, most ponderous films in the franchise (I like it, don't get me wrong...but an action film it is NOT).

My buddy, who is a casual fan, saw this and texted me and said "wow...it looks a lot like the original TV show."

Yup...that's about how I felt too. Looking forward to more!

I'd just like to point out for all of the naysayers:

  • This is a teaser trailer that is about 85 seconds long for a film that will likely be around 84 of those trailers in length but not necessarily in content.
  • The trailer is designed to be in front of a movie for general audiences.
  • The action and adventure are probably really being focused on because its in front of a Star Wars movie.
  • You want Star Trek to survive? You can't rely on catering solely to the dying fanbase.
  • Star Trek, as in the original series, was designed to be an action-adventure series with a space background that, on occasion, had social commentary. Only when we got to The Next Generation, did we get the "perfect humanity" stuff that everyone equates with Trek these days.
  • In my opinion, this shows in a lot of ways exactly what the original Star Trek was all about. Only with a much larger budget behind it.
Could it be terrible? Sure!
Are you entitled to your opinion? Absolutely!
Am I allowed to refute it? You're damned right I am!

Assuming the motorcycle uses the standard Earth engine of the 20th century, I doubt there would be any petrol around in the time period in which Star Trek is set, something no one seemed to point out when Pine was riding a bike in Star Trek 2009.

I can't listen to the audio for the moment but the trailer looked good.

Disappointed that the Enterprise is being treated like a punching bag again and will be completely destroyed on top of that.

Having a writer credit means we'll get to see more of the detestable Simon Pegg.

A question - if there were not elements of Star Trek in the film, is there anything in the trailer that would differentiate this film from the average action film?

You mean elements like 'the humor'
or 'the characters'
or 'the technology'
or 'the setting'
or 'the story'

you're right, then there's nothing trekky about it

Assuming the motorcycle uses the standard Earth engine of the 20th century...

No one's assuming that. Logic fail.

(Anyway, there's likely going to be a lot of "petrol" available in Trek's day).

Lin has talked at length about his love for the original Star Trek growing up and how that got him into accepting this assignment.

If anyone has evidence otherwise, they'd better post some evidence or look foolish.

BTW, oldTrek's done. It's not coming back any more than 1987 is coming back...which is kind of a pity, if you like shoulder pads and George Michael.

Having a writer credit means we'll get to see more of the detestable Simon Pegg.

He's one of my favorites, and admirable rather than detestable. :techman:

Second that. But till the last minute of the film I won't believe they won't bring her back via time-travel or magical superblood.

The same for First Contact's trailers. In fact, the first teaser borrowed ship battle scenes from other parts of Star Trek!

Some context for some who are having negative reactions to the feel of the trailer, we need to keep in mind this trailer was designed to premiere in front of Star Wars for its fans, not to pander to our corner of the interwebs.

Edited to add: campe98 explained this well a few posts above.
