Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

I don't think we will have news about the Idris Elba character in the first trailer. They will hide him until just before the premiere. Maybe we see something about Sofia, probably Kirk, Spock and Co. and action scenes.

I agree. They may want to contrast with SW by emphasising the human exploration angle. But of course there will be an explosion at the end. ;)

Glad to be apart of the fandom :techman:

I, like you, am already a fan of Scotty. Closest thing to an Irishman we have on the show (apart from Riley lol), sad to say :(

Scotty is great. But DS9 has Miles O'Brien. He's from Ireland.
Technically, TNG had O'Brien and established his Irish background.

Also, 60s era television was not ready for an Irishman on a scifi show. Some things had to wait until the 80s, like Blazing Saddles predicted.

Oh, and welcome :)

Would 60s US television been able to differentiate between an Irishman and a Scotsman?

Even in the world of movies, Sean Connery played an Irishman in "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" in 1959.

Sure. Compare Scotty with Kevin Riley or Finnegan. They're two distinct fake accents, and were two distinct ethnic stereotypes in the media culture of most of the 20th century.

Sure, but both accents would likely be laid on with a shovel. Ethnic characterizations were not very subtle in those days, as a general rule.

I seem to recall Harry Morgan having more than one or two roles which called for him to play a stereotypical Irishman.

He played one again in 1987, in "the Untouchables".

This was posted on Reddit last night. Either the trailer will not be tied to IMAX showings of Star Wars, or it's a fake. I'm leading towards the former, it looks pretty real to me.

I have not seen the movie or read the script. I know as much as anybody.

great

/sarcasm

I'm having a knee jerk reaction reading that, and feeling negative. It's not a mystery that I loved the first two movies and I'm worried that a new creative team could ruin everything I liked in them and make a movie that doesn't respect the story and the dynamics between the characters so far.
My only hope was that at least with some people from the first creative team still involved as producers, they could have some sort of control...but JJ was busy with star wars and Orci is a producer only in name here.
Not even the comics have any connection to the movies anymore, unless Pegg decides to help Johnson now.

^^ Funny how you can go from almost complete control (writer\director) to being completely in the dark.

ST09 and STID had rather different tones, IMO, so I don't see why STB shouldn't be different as well.
