Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Besides, what sense does it to pull this from deep down the EU rabbit hole? Obviously, yes, I recall Palpatine's story of Plagueis, but why would they choose to go back to that? Why when JJ and Lucasfilm have decided they don't need to pull all that much from the overly bloated EU would they pull a character who while had certain implications for the story, never actually appeared in a movie?

I'm not saying there aren't aspects of the EU they're using. I bet there are. But a character like that? Who Palpatine said he killed in his sleep? Yeah, it would just be way too much fanwank in my opinion.

Snoke is Snoke.
Plagueis is dead.

If I'm wrong, I'll be happy to admit it. But now, I just don't see it.

We all know that truth is told in the Star Wars Universe from a "certain point of view" so who knows if Palpatine was telling the actual truth or blowing snoke up Anakin's ass.

There is no reason for Snoke to be a significant character other than some vaguely defined evil that motivates Hipster Vader to go out and resurrect the Sithstreet Boys. So it would work for him to actually b e Plagueis who floated through the last few decades like smoke, unknown to his powerful descendants.....

@JD: Do you mean in reply to Samurai8472? I did post about that action figure spoiler, but only in the Forum That Shall Not Be Named. ;)

EDIT: This post is a response to FSM.
I doubt it very much. Like Campe98, I could be wrong, but I just don't see them going back to such an obscure part of the prequels (I know he's a big deal in the EU, but we already know they are moving away from the EU) to get stuff for the new movies. Besides, the whole thing with the Sith is that they kill each other before they take over, and I can't see one Sith just sitting back for so many decades while another took over the galaxy. Not to mention the fact that they've already said the Knights of Ren are not Sith, and I'm pretty sure having a Sith Lord like Plagueis as their leader would make them Sith. They could be lying I guess, but I doubt they would pull that again after pretty much everybody involved with Star Trek Into Darkness and the whole Khan controversy admitted blatantly lying like that was a mistake.
EIDT: This part is a response to Gep Malakai.
Not to surprised to see that. I was just really hoping her staff was secretly a lightsaber.

Plageus is canon, and when someone asked Kasden about it at Celebration (that it could be Plagues' staff.. it DOES look like it) Kasden looked uncomfortable..

Work? Yes. I'll grant that. It could work.
But it doesn't answer the question of why JJ, Kennedy and Lucasfilm would:

1.) Bring back this character in the first place.
2.) Utilize a now defunct character design. The novel Darth Plagueis, despite how many EU fanboys want it to, just doesn't matter any longer.

And we don't know what motivations Snoke has at this point. All we know is he's damaged. He's angry. And he's patient. In about nine days and five hours, I hope to know more about Snoke. But I'm not convinced at all they'd bring back this deus ex machina back.

Probably looked uncomfortable for the same reason Levar Burton looks uncomfortable when asked about warp dynamics at a convention.

The reports I've read said that Kasdan didn't know who the character was. It's a fairly minor character name. You can't expect him to know everyone from the prequels or characters he didn't name himself. I don't fault him for that. It's reaching a lot.

And Daisy Ridley said in an interview that fans are reaching -- that it was just a staff. Not Plagueis'.

Maybe Snoke is wearing a Muun mask and is actually someone we've actually met.

Like Palpatine.
Or a cloned Vader.
Or Jar Jar.

All would have reason to be damaged and patient. And angry. :p

Probably because he has no idea who he is. It is a minor bit of dialogue from a mediocre movie.

Or Jar Jar.

All would have reason to be damaged and patient. And angry. :p

The internet explosion would be delicious! :guffaw:

I hope he's several Ewoks standing on top of each other wearing a trench coat. It would be superior to anything shoehorned in from the prequels.

Chief Chirpa, Wicket and Teebo do a great Three Stooges routine. Return of the Jedi originally ended with "Nyuk Nyuk" but the studio objected and ordered a change to avoid a lawsuit.

So... on today's Collider Movie Talk movie news show, they decided to show that sketch of Snoke I posted upthread. The team at Collider have also been speculating that Snoke and Plageus were the same guy since this all started, and then they discussed the topic on the show, the picture only fueled their belief that they were the same character. After airing the epsiode, Disney called them and asked them to remove all the Snoke discussion.

From John Campea, senior producer.
Hey guys, some of may notice that the title and thumbnail for today's Movie Talk has been changed. Pretty soon, the video itself will be edited down as well to remove the first topic discussed (it was a Star Wars topic). I just wanted to get on here before any speculation started as to why this is happening.
A few hours after the show posted, Disney contacted me and very respectfully requested that we take the segment out. Please understand Disney has never... in almost 10 years that I've dealt with them... EVER requested that I take anything down (nor have I ever put them in a position where they would feel the need to ask). My team and Disney have always had a very good relationship. When I talk mad shit about Agents of Shield, they have never asked me to "tone it down" or "please say something nice". They have always respected our editorial integrity. So when they politely called me and requested we take a topic down today I decided to grant the request. It wasn't an urgent story that fans "had a right to know" or anything important. I didn't feel that removing the topic was somehow a "disservice to the fans", or was in any way "important to the community". So I felt ok about pulling it.
It's important to know that the studios don't have any editorial influence over us, and Disney fully agrees with that. However, just because someone isn't your boss, doesn't mean you can't do something for them if they make a request. Today, Disney made a respectful request, and out of respect we obliged.
So that's it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, I'll answer what I can. Cheers!

The design of the character is one thing. Even if this is a sign of something and it is how Snoke looks like, the idea of him being Plagueis is still far in left field.

But okay, let's assume that he is Plagueis for just one second. What makes you think they'll use the story that Luceno wrote that fanboys go gaga over? Lucasfilm is beholden to absolutely nothing in the EU. Which means we don't know if Plagueis has a staff. Which means we don't know that he's a Muun. Which means all we really know about him is this exchange of dialogue from Revenge of the Sith:

Palpatine: Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis "the wise"?
Anakin: No.
Palpatine: I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith who lived many years ago. He was so powerful and so wise that he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life... He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying.
Anakin: He could do that? He could actually save people from death?
Palpatine: The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
Anakin: What happened to him?
Palpatine: He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, and then one night, his apprentice killed him in his sleep. It's ironic that he could save others from death, but not himself.
Anakin: Is it possible to learn this power?
Palpatine: Not from a Jedi.
That's it. Nine lines of dialogue. Maybe a minute of exposition.

Maybe he is Plagueis. I'll admit that it is a possibility but a fairly unlikely one. If he is, he's not going to be the Plagueis you want him to be.

I'm personally more intrigued with A Jewel Christmas' Ewok idea. ;)

Yub yub. :techman:

(Also 8 days, 11 hours and 25 minutes for me... But who's counting? ;) )

Darth Plagueis or not, I just hope he's even half as interesting and sinister as The Emperor was because that would guarantee a great new lead villain for our heroes to face in the new trilogy.
