Special guest announced for Christmas (spoilers)

Maybe it's me, but I find it amusing that Matt Smith isn't exactly thrilled that Alex Kingston will be appearing in Doctor Who without him.

I also didn't know that Smith had been a guest at Kingston's wedding this summer. That's cute. :)

Me too! In fact I have this little scenario in my head where Matt and David watch the Christmas special together and jokingly act like jilted lovers, then have a friendly argument over which of them had better chemistry with her!

I have way too much time on my hands.

Jesus, those Trailers are embarassing; like Doctor Who being remade as a Saturday morning cartoon.

Based entirely on that picture and no other information at all, I'm going to guess that the Doctor lands the TARDIS and goes off to do something. River finds it, excited to see the Doctor again, and walks inside to find it empty.

The Doctor returns to his TARDIS. River opens the door and says, "Who are you?"

That would be a silly, if not lame way to keep River from recognizing Capaldi as the Doctor. If would be fun seeing them act that out though.

I'm not suggesting she go the whole episode not knowing him. I was just ad-libbing their introduction scene.

It's Moffat, so it could go either way

I am putting this is in a spoiler but not sure if it qualifies but on Blogtor Who they wrote regarding River knowing the Doctor:

That he gets to be her companion for some of the episode and even has his own version of "it's bigger on the inside" when she brings him to the Tardis.
Sounds like she is not going to know who he is for part of the episode. Could be fun, like in Time Crash when 5 did not recognise 10.

I actually think that would be fun, as long as its only for, say, half the episode and not the whole thing.

In a way, full circle. When the first met, the Doctor had no clue who she was, but River knew everything about him. Now, the Doctor knows...basically everything about her, but she doesn't know who he is (not seen this face before). But like the first time, they'll figure it out.

This one definitely looks great! River Song and the 12th Doctor seem to work great together.

Yes, this is my interpretation as well. Of course, this doesn't mean that this is her last ever appearance in the series.

Greg Davies' character seems to be channelling Nixon off Futurama when he got his robotic body.

I have this feeling that, when it's all over, River will say something like, "You idiot, you didn't really think I didn't know who you were, did you?" :)

Early on their meetings were said to be "back to front", but some of the later meetings blew that theory up. No reason to think this has to be their first or last encounter.

I always took that as a poetic turn of phrase from River, otherwise there would be no reason for River and the Doctor to compare diaries at the diner as they would never have shared memories of adventures together if their lives were literally lived "back to front."

That's definitely another take on it, but a lot of ideas in nuWho get forgotten or thrown out completely.

I'd prefer we never actually see the last of River, she's fun as an occasional guest. The phantom version from TNOTD was "after" her death in the Library, right?

It was, yes. Which is really strange when you think about how the Doctor says he could always see her. That means that she's followed him around for (at that point) about 300 years, watching him have adventures with all sorts of people, including herself. She got to watch how the Doctor experienced their relationship. She got to see her own mother snog the Doctor on the night before Amy's wedding, for instance. All along, River might have been talking to him, and he ignored her and pretended he couldn't see her.

That's really strange. It's an interesting idea when you think about it, but as a practical matter, it's almost unbelievable.
