Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

Now that CBS has ordered it, I know series love long arcs, but I would prefer some of the established arc wrap up by season's end. There's many stories to be told without the aunt / Lord business going on and on. I hope they can take advantage of the DC universe that's not tied to the coming JL movies, and that's quite a lot.

Yay. "One of the fall's top-rated new shows." So much for the fears that the show was suffering in the ratings.

Interesting phrasing in the article... "“Supergirl” has had faith from the CBS from the get-go." Is that a typo, or a Variety style-guide holdover from when the network's full official name was "The Columbia Broadcasting System"?

I'd like some of these arcs to wrap up before the season end. One of my problems with Season 1 of The Flash was it felt like there were some arcs that were just dragged out (Like Iris being kept in the dark). I don't want that to happen in this show, but I know it will.

I thought the show was suffering in the Ratings. They seemed to be going down each week. Maybe the target demographic didn't which is why they got the full order?

Only 20 episodes, just short of the usual 22 or 23.

Tonight... Red Tornado.

Still, a lot of shows these days favor having shorter seasons, because it means less filler and more time to devote to each episode. Given Supergirl's rather spectacular VFX, a 20-episode season would have more time and money per episode than a 22-episode season and could therefore have better visuals.

Awesome news. While the ratings may not be blowing the roof off the place, it does still sound like they're good enough once you factor in all the delayed viewing.

Well whatever the reason, 20 episodes sounds more ideal to me anyway. Much as I enjoy Flash and Arrow, it does feel like their main story arcs get dragged out a lot longer than they should every season.

That's twice now today I've read about episode story lines being dragged out therefore I am starting a petition to get hour long shows cut to a tighter 30 minute format. :ouch:

Don't give them ideas.

Programs are already nearly 10 minutes shorter than they were 20 years so they can fit all the extra ads in.

Another benefit of this short season is the show debuted later than most. There should be fewer reruns before the season ends.

Agreed. It is not necessary for every series to have overblown, would-be sprawling plotlines that thread and inform every episode forward. At times, that can smother character development when the arc is more important than the individual (see: The Avengers movies).

Personally at this point I'd rather the show develop and focus more on those character arcs (involving Astra, Henshaw, and whatever Maxwell Lord is up to) over the cheesy villains of the week, which for me continues to be the only real weak part of the show.

I'll have to catch tonight's episode on the website later. Charlie Brown trumps Supergirl.

Morrow (or T.O. Morrow from the comics) and Red Tornado stand to be a nice addition to the series. It's this more colorful world building that will strengthen the "super" side of the series, so Kara does not look like one of a few fantastic characters in town.

Nice boxing / frustration release scene. Trading their "minority / anger perceptions" was just enough social commentary without the show jumping on a soapbox, and beating the audience over the head with it. Like real friends, Kara and James do not have to over explain their positions (and the audience understands that).

Interesting that Kara has anger about being sent to earth (away from a presumed normal life), but that's never been a huge problem for her cousin. Certainly, various interpretations have explored Clark trying to find his own form of humanity, but that's not rage.

Similar to the S.T.A.R. Labs / Cadmus plot from the animated Justice League, the government creating anti-superhero (or Kryptonian) technology. Another positive for the series, along with the Henshaw matter.

The four part rivalry (four as Kara and Lane have two sides, each in growing conflict with each other) reads like it will be one of the subplots to run throughout the life of the series, no matter what part James plays in that. Then again, Cat sort of shaming Kara about her public crush could take this all in another direction--less social, more adversarial. Lane's father dressing down James seems like a plot device to get him to prove his "worth" to him / aggressively keep that relationship with Lucy going.

What's the cause of Kara's skin cut by simple glass? It makes one think she's a unwitting walking experiment (DEO) to serve the same purpose as Red Tornado's tech. In any case, that will be the plot of the next episode.

Some of the FX work (ex. some flying shots) really need improvement; they are so clearly composite work that in no way looks like she's a part of the environment. The tornado FX were very video game-like.

Can you name one show that's on a major network that has a shorter season (and/or did not receive a full 'back nine') order that has gotten or will get renewed? This show is not on AMC or even the CW. Given the way budgets are spread across the season w/r/t the inventory available to sell ads against I can't imagine the budgetary one is a reason to only have 20.

Supergirl might survive to Season 2 and might have gotten a shorter order because it started later than all the other new shows but I'd have been much happier with a full 'back nine' order.
