Star Trek: Renegades

Yes we take the fans critiques very importantly and try to adjust based on the feedback (We are Borg after all ;) ). I am very excited to see the script Melinda writes!

Tom, Thanks for clearing that up for me. It's even worse than I originally thought! It appears that a huge part of the money is going to pay the Actors (which is most of the production team). This seems, to me, like a vehicle just to make money. Can you tell me if the Actors are making scale and is the production SAG signatory? I have read that none of the other fan films pay their actors, because they do it out of love for the franchise. At some point, CBS will likely look at this payment as profit and they may ask for a full accounting of all your expenses. Renegades and Axanar may just kill fan films forever, and that will be a sad day.

Not to derail the thread too far, but this point stuck out to me. While productions on this scale may come under scrutiny of CBS and may get C&D, that's a risk fan films run regardless. The idea that it would kill fan films is unlikely, because people, such as myself and friends of mine, still have cameras, costumes and resources to draw upon. Fan films, of any property, have existed since cameras, and will continue to do so for the reason you stated-for the love of the franchise.

Also, I am impressed with the caliber of actors Renegades has been able to recruit. I look forward to seeing more.

Paying the actors is not profit, it's expense. Profit is charging the viewers to see it. And that is the Numero Uno big no-no for fan-films. It has gotten many fan-films in big trouble, including one or two ST fan-films.

Quick numbers: Your production costs are ~$11,363.00 a minute. That's $10,000 more than other fan productions. Can you tell me/ us why you cost more than them?

It is simply not true that no other fan films pay their actors. As far back as Yorktown, in the 1980s, some fan films paid professional actors.

Congrats to the Renegades team for almost makeing 100K in the first day. Quite an achievement.

I can understand why people are asking - why do they need these big numbers if other fan films can make films for far less. But lets be honest - most of the other fan films do not reach the level that Renegades or Axanar have. The two that stand out are NV and STC, and both also have Kickstarters that run around 75K per 45 minute episode. They most likely also finance themselves additionally by their own members and a lot of enthusiasm. Most if not all people (except SAG actors) that work on these fan shows work completely for free, pay their own travel and lodging when shooting and these projects already have standing sets. Since people are working on their free time, it sometimes takes months or years for a fan film to be completed - or some don´t cross the finish line at all.

Productions like Renegades and Axanar have to build everything from scratch and have to pay a lot more people because they are hiring pros. Surely at a much cheaper rate then what they would normally earn, but that still can add up very quickly to signifcant sums.

Although I would really love to see a cost breakdown from Renegades like Axanar does.

One thing that is a bit confusing in the Kickstarter is that the 350K is not for the whole episode, but just for the production, excluding postproduction (Editing, Sound, VFX) - which is a huge chunk. You would think at least the first stretch goal would be to cover that, but it is the production of the third episode.

My fear with Renegades is that with the addition of all these new actors there will be an overflow of characters, while it would be essential to have a good story.

The episode 3 stretch goal is before the VFX stretch goal because we want to film them back to back, so we need to concentrate on getting that for timing reasons. The VFX we have more time to get the funds.

OK, in that case, not so much a critique as a spoiler story comment--

Rightly or not, unavoidably or not, Chekov's group has committed actual genocide. The consequences and fallout of that are going to be overpowering and possibly politically catastrophic, and seen as a complete overturning of the Federation's values. Don't neglect that!

Tom,

I wish you the best of luck and hope you guys kick this one out of the park!! I just thought that your Kickstarter was deceptive. It’s a typical move on many crowd funding campaigns to falsely advertise in the first line or two, only to explain the real intent lower on the page. You may look at it as product placement, but it is purely a deceptive move to get more money. Ethically, you really shouldn’t say that the $350,000 will fund episode 2 and 3 in the first line, then change that at the bottom of the page.

Yorktown never paid the professional actors who worked on the Sulu fan-film. It was a different time in the 1980s. What we did have was SAG agreements for them to volunteer their services on the fan-film. George Takei and James Shigeta both worked on the film for free. It was all done for fun.

I stand corrected.

That said, I'm pretty sure that NV has paid some of their guest stars.

I became a fan and supporter of Renegades the moment I found out about the return of Jadzia Dax!! <3 I have dreamed of this for so long...finally there is so much hope!! Now I am dedicated to helping Renegades reach their fundraising goal - I've done a lot of blogging about it and sharing it on social media, but let me know if there is anything else I can do!

That would be cool! Or Odo or Data!
I'm really hoping for Worf, though :klingon:

This just in, from the Renegades site! So exciting! :D

Even if they could bring back Jadzia, she couldn't be Jadzia Dax. And that would be a disappointment, as I'd rather see Jadzia Dax than Jadzia whoever. I wonder, is she going to be a clone?
