So they've finally worked out that being a Christmas Special doesn't mean you have to be a CHRISTMAS Special. Only took them 10 years:

Umm... RTD figured that out by "The Runaway Bride". His later ones may have been set at Christmas, but they weren't about Christmas. It's only Moffat who cranked the Christmas obsession up to 11.

Well, since A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite Doctor who stories (old or NuWho), I'm fine with the christmas special being christmas themed, although as long as they're good episodes it doesn't really matter.

I don't think "The Snowmen" particularly Christmassy. I don't even remember if it takes place at Christmas, or just in winter.

It does take place around Christmas but like you say it isn't particularly Christmassy which does dent the "All Moffat's Christmas specials are eleventy stupid notion" Most of them, yes, but not all!

I think the difference is between making a story that takes place over Christmas and making a story specifically *about* Christmas. Personally, I prefer the former.
