Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

My guess is that it was perhaps too much trouble for those engines to compensate for infinite ray-trace loops. Too many developers were likely accidentally shooting themselves in the foot with highly-reflective/mirrored surfaces and constantly crashing their systems. So, they got rid of the primary offenders to prevent it from ever happening at all.

Possibly. Still, I'll take physically based rendering over a true mirrored surface any day.

Looks great! What's the overhang for anyway, storage?

It's easy to see how you could make that a couple of bunks for enlisted crew.

Worked on the Junior Officer's variant of the quarters set today...still have to add a few details (like the control panel near the bed). Unfortunately, Unreal Engine 4 doesn't support a true mirrored surface at this time, so the mirror will remain black until I find a workaround. All the random objects are only temporary.

Great recreation, Donny...!

I've talked to you in the Facebook but you probably don't remember...!! ;)

Just to corroborate your creation I'll post here some screencaps I did recently, while watching TMP...!!

You are (as always) in the right way...!!! :D

Cheers!

Over the last two days, I've managed to make the sonic shower and the desk in the officer's quarters.

Here's a shot of the shower from the bed of the junior officer's quarters:

I added a couple details that weren't seen in TMP, like the "drain" at the bottom and the overhead light:

The desk in the senior officer's quarters was barely ever seen in any of the TOS movies. We only catch the console end of it in these two shots (far left of each shot):

But we luckily get to see more of the desk, as it was featured in the TNG episode "The Battle" as the desk in Picard's quarters aboard the Stargazer, and it was heavily featured as Data's desk throughout TNG:

Here's my rendition, littered with props, and a copy of Nicholas Meyer's "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution".

I always loved those shelves in TWOK for some reason.

I would think if Meyer had gotten his hands on it that the sonic shower would have been a water shower.

Great progress Donny. I've been dreading the desk for quite a while myself, but your rendition is awesome.

Are you going to insert that little shelfie nook along the curved wall that appears to meet up with some portion of the desktop's length? I have no idea if it was there for the films, but it was present as early as "The Battle", and would eventually serve as a recessed space to house those little narrow "tool box" drawers seen in Data's quarters.

Now for that wacky table with the weird chairs that snap into it!

I'm definitely not going to have that modular table from TMP in the TWOK version of the officer's quarters, but I am considering having a similar style table in a movie era Briefing Room, which was never seen on screen.

I'm planning on adding the nook tonight. in "The Battle", the nook is partially covered by the desk, which doesn't make much sense. Im going to attempt to rectify the problem; by either changing the entire shape of the nook to fit the edges of the desk, or add small narrow drawers, but again matching the flow of the desk edge.

I was a little nervous about tackling this desk, since it's all one unified molded piece, which is much more difficult to model than an object made of several parts. But I knocked it out in just two modeling sessions (about 6 hours total)

What table are we talking about?

I can't read the title but I assume that that is the Seven Percent Solution.

A few years back I thought about how much I missed the briefing room in the movies.

Was looking forward to the officer's quarters; as always not disappointed!

Aww, I was looking forward to your take on the unseen table, but I understand how it wouldn't fit the TWOK design theme.

Not to get ahead of things, but for the briefing room are you starting from a clean sheet of paper or have you found some preliminary design work from back in the day? As I understand there was space on Stage 9 for a briefing room set where the Kirk / Spock / McCoy discussion was to have taken place but it was abandoned and they used that quick and dirty observation lounge set instead.

Shane Johnson of Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise describes the table in this interview:

I did get to see the corner booth/table unit that always had been in Kirk's quarters but was never seen on film (it appears on the floorplan in MSG), and it had a clear plexiglas tabletop and snazzy upholstery. That same corner of the room is seen in ST II, where the set had been redressed into Spock's quarters, but for that film the booth/table had been replaced with Spock's kneeling/meditation alcove.

Oh, no I'm definitely going to model that booth table in the corner. I was earlier referring to the table that was in the TMP Kirk's Quarters, that had these modular chairs that snapped into it. I may use a similar table for the briefing room set I have planned.

Here's today's updates, finishing the desk area and adding the nicely textured chairs...
