All hail the pasta god...

I thought you weren't supposed to smile for driver's license photos, something about it being more difficult for face recognition software.

Only in Arkansas, Indiana, Nevada, New Jersey, and Virginia. Although Arkansas, Indiana, and Nevada apparently allow very slight closed-mouth grins (no pearly whites) which make you look like every mugshot of a sex offender you've ever seen on TV, so there's that.

31 other states also do computerized ID matching, but apparently they invested in better facial recognition software that can't be foiled by the high-tech Q-Branch countermeasure of smiling.

One can only imagine the kind of deviant psychopath practiced in the dark art of human emotional mimicry that it would take to be able to summon a smile after standing in line at the human slaughterhouse that is the DMV for three hours. That these sick criminal masterminds walk among us at this very moment, waiting to strike, because of substandard facial recognition software gives me chills.

I know it is a joke but really your state issued ID is not the place for such jokes.

All hail the state.

Jesus. Yeah, sure, wanting ID cards whose main purpose is identification to clearly show people's face and head uncovered is clearly the road to totalitarianism. Go off the deep end much?

This isn't quite as dumb as Florida allowing Muslim women to wear a burka, thus obscuring their entire face, on an ID card but there should be clear rules which everyone has to follow so that the purpose of the ID, to allow people to be accurately identified, is actually served. I don't think that is unreasonable or the road to totalitarianism.

Then what is the problem? Her face is clearly recognizable, the function of the ID card is maintained and her religious beliefes are observed. win-win. :techman:

Well, many DMV's let you renew a driver's license online, so that helps a lot. Unfortunately our DMV only lets us do this once every ten years.

I guess she is lampooning people who wear crosses? I would think most people who are atheists would also self identify as political progressives, therefore they would not wish to openly mock religious minorities like Sikhs and conservative Muslims (or Jews for that matter) that wear special head gear as a part of their religious observances or for everyday devotional purposes.

I don't think you can assume that. Many atheists consider religion idiotic and probably consider the religious to be idiots. It's only politeness that stops them from calling them idiots...

I am curious as to the various opinions the resident atheists on this site have of the whole Pastafarian thing...

Love it.
A short while ago the Pastafarian church had a sign put up at the city entrance showing the time for their mass.
The christian churches had it taken down again, because they felt ridiculed.

I find it raviolating to make a macaroni of the sauce of someone's faith like that with such a strained meta-flour. They should suffer endless penne and rotini Hell.

That's why we love you man - you put in the long seconds it takes to make terrible puns. Don't ever change.

It amuses me.

But why do you ask?

Genuine curiosity.
As a person of faith I find the Pastafarian movement to be amusing, non-threatening, and rather silly.
I was interested in seeing what the folks on the other side of the street thought of that movement.

I don't know that I have any opinion on the pastafarians. I think it's good to have some questioning of religion in an overly religious country, though.

Agreed.

Seconds? I'll have you know that truly awful puns take a lifetime of work. We don't do this just for the halibut, you know! :scream:

Meh. I get what you're saying, but the whole point of the Pastafarians is that they've always kept it genial and lighthearted. There isn't cruelty here, and there isn't targeted bigotry against minorities. There is just a general (and generally harmless) commentary on religion.

And many atheists don't let politeness stop them. But the majority don't think or behave that way, another reason the Pastafarians are alright: they use a bit of humor to (hopefully) get people thinking.

I don't think they're anywhere near as cool or effective as the Satanic Temple. The Satanists are heroes.

I think the whole Pastafarian/Flying Spaghetti Monster thing is hilarious. It's a very clever and lighthearted way to point out the absurdity we live with on a daily basis.
