Speculation on Luke's role in TFA

The Wormhole

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Okay, so I'm a bit behind in all the stuff known so far about The Force Awakens, but what we do know is:

-The villain, Kylo Ren is some sort of student of the Sith ways and practically worships Darth Vader, to the point he keeps Vader's melted helmet and talks to it. Ren himself constantly wears a mask, even when alone in his quarters. There is supposedly a twist regarding his identity

-Nothing is known about what Luke's role in the movie is. We think that's him with the hood and the bionic hand kneeling next to R2-D2 in the trailers, but that's it. Some speculate he might have turned Dark Side.

Now, maybe I'm out to lunch, but is it possible Luke Skywalker is Kylo Ren? For whatever reason, he now conceals his identity and carries Dad's stuff around wherever he goes. Like I said, I'm not up on all the TFA rumours and theories, so maybe others have already guessed this, or maybe there's info out there that contradicts it completely.

Thoughts?

I hope he isn't Kylo Ren. That would make this yet another film/trilogy where a Skywalker turns to the dark side and has to be stopped/redeemed.

Been there, done that, no thanks.

I can handle Kylo Ren being a former student of Luke who turned to evil- a nice reflection of the Obi-Wan/Vader dynamic. There is a shot in the trailers which was described as a return to the old temple on Yavin's moon which was in the novels used as Luke's old Jedi training facility, perhaps they are there to learn more about the failed student?

I think that Luke will be monochrome and see-through in this film, with a shimmery effect around the edges.

We know Adam Driver plays Kylo. His body type is completely dissimilar to Hamil. We also see him without mask here:

He loses the helmet at some point on the snow planet during the climax.

Oh, I see. So all this about Kylo Ren having a secret is just exaggerations, then? Or maybe he's Luke's son? That could explain the Vader obsession, although carrying Grandpa's helmet around is kind of weird.

Also, would explain who Luke is talking to in that trailer that used the speech about "The Force runs strong in my family" speech from ROTJ which Hamil did confirm he delivers again in TFA.

A hologram? ;)

*BIG SIGH*

This just. Won't. Die.

No, Luke is not Kylo Ren. Kylo Ren is played by Adam Driver. There are two shots where we have seen him without the mask, one from the front and one from the back. He is not Luke.

I'm sorry if I sound harsh; it's not you. I just find this rumor exasperating and I'm astounded that it is still alive all over the internet.

As to Luke, we don't know, but the thought is that he's in hiding somewhere. Personally, I think he will show up near the end of the movie, in the final act or MAYBE act 3. Some people say RIGHT at the end, but I think that they made too big of a deal about getting Hamill back and putting him on a diet just to have him film one scene in the movie at the very end.

If Luke has gone into hiding, I wonder if it isn't to atone for his failure but to take the next generation of apprentices away from a new Republic that wants to use them as weapons. Perhaps when they find him, he isn't alone.

Based on the shot of him from behind i would have said, no, it's not Luke, but he looks similar to Anakin Skywalker in his prime from Revenge of the Sith.
now if only this were in a universe where a character could come back via cloning or something!

But then, the frontal shot of him without the mask shoots that in the foot

Since Adam Driver looks a bit like Harrison Ford, some people think he might be Han/Leias son. I definitely think he's related to the Skywalkers somehow.

If that shot from behind with R2 & the robot hand is Luke, he may show up earlier - tho he may be separated from the others. That shot looks to have Rey's hometown on Jakku burning down in the background - there are a few shots of Flamethrower troops burning & Ties attacking that town in the trailer. Maybe he shows up in the aftermath of the attack, after Han et al gtfo.

Apparently the shot of 'Luke' (actually stand-in actor Robert Boulter) with Artoo from the trailer is a flashback...

The Imperial remnants and/or the Knights of Ren blitzkrieg-ed Luke's attempt at a Jedi Academy (on Yavin IV) and slaughtered every single one of his students, killing the New Jedi Order in its cradle (and apparently killing Luke's and/or Han & Leia's preschool-age kids). That's when Luke disappears off the face of the galaxy.

Right, he's not. But....

I'm going straight into spoiler code - even though these are essentially rumors and NOT spoilers, they are from makingstarwars.net who have been consistently correct recently about big and small details as these trailers have been released.

So... you've been warned:

A few different tidbits have been explored from 'sources' as early as one year ago.

It has been suggested that Kylo Ren is going around the galaxy killing and destroying, saying that he's Luke Skywalker. Not sure how I feel about that, or why that would be the case.

Luke Skywalker is rumored to be hiding out on some isolated planet by himself. The reason for this is.... and here's where you need the salt shaker... since the Force lost its dark side [death of Vader/Palps] the way The Force exists in the SW Universe has been changed. As a result, Luke is now so powerful that he doesn't want to be around anyone else for their own safety, because his surging powers are dangerous to others.

It's been suggested the film scene of the film is Rey with Luke, and Luke is able to lift up an entire mountain range behind him using the force. Luke is now an incredibly powerful Jedi, beyond his own control. [The Michael Skellig shoot]

Luke is in the first full trailer for TFA. He puts his bionic hand on R2D2. Everything around him seems as though it is burning. We may be seeing a flash back to some event that took place between the Original and Sequel Trilogies.

I'm expecting to see Luke featured on the poster for both Episodes 8 and 9.

The rumor I read was that Luke has grown so powerful with the Force that he goes into self-imposed exile because he does not trust himself to control his powers. I am guessing the shot in the trailer with the temple is the gang going to find Luke to bring him out of exile because they need him to stop Kylo Ren.

I heard the "Kylo claims to be Luke" rumor. This other one is new to me. Seems a bit fanboyish.

I agree that Luke will probably be the one to eventually stop Kylo, and for most of the movie, he won't be around. We'll see.

The supposedly most reliable information at the moment is that
Kylo Ren (not his birth name, but a Knights of Ren identity he picked for himself) is Han Solo and Leia's son. Rumor is he kills Han after repudiating any familial relationship.

Whoever he is, he's not Luke Skywalker. I don't know why people keep thinking that, but it's fucking everywhere. It makes no sense.
