New Trek Series to begin streaming on CBS All Access in 2017

A muslim captain would be more in vogue if the historical Trek aspiration for the social frontier is any guide. But can you imagine what would happen were they to use such a character in Chekov's place for comedic relief?

Muslim Captain: Is there no sun in this cursed expanse?! Which way is East?!!

:)

She didn't have a name in the film, but in at least one novel she did (Margaret Sinclair-Alexander).

And she had a few lines when they detected the probe, then the ship gets knocked out, and then she sent out a distress call.

So I have to ask, when the announcement clearly states that "the new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film 'Star Trek Beyond,'" and I assume so too either of the other two films, why this thread remains open in the Star Trek Movies XI+ forum.

:p

It falls under "+"

It trips over "Star Trek Movies" and lands face-first on its "+".

I suppose the pilot episode airing on CBS is kinda like a "movie of the week" as I imagine it will be feature length.

IOW, two brief scenes and then never heard from again. It's not what anyone would reasonably describe as a prominent or central role for a black woman actor.

Also not a starring series role, which is what N.K. Jemisin's piece was specifically speaking to.

'Nother also: Pics posted as embedded images should be hosted on web space or an image-sharing account registered to the poster*. Cinema Geekly, I'll be converting yours to a link, as it appears to have been linked from someone's blog.

(* They should also not impulsively be treated as the subject of a caption contest, but that's another story altogether. You know who you are. ;) )

It's also worth pointing out that not only did TNG have a black woman captain (Tryla Scott), she was also noted to have achieved the captaincy faster than anyone in Starfleet history. Of course this isn't the same as the lead in a show, but it's not like this demographic has been ignored over the 50 year history of Trek.

The announcement says that it's not related to the upcoming film. That can mean several things.

What it emphatically does not mean is that the series in no way leverages any of the content of the current movie series. Given that the guy in charge of the show is one half of the writing and producing team that rebooted Star Trek continuity in 2009 and brought back Khan in 2013 it's really, really unlikely that he's about to start pandering to oldTrek trufans - or that CBS hired him with that in mind.

I read that line meaning that the new show won't have any plot ties to BEYOND. Other than that, Kurtzman and the new team will certainly look to the success of the last two films and try to replicate that for the small screen.

Like you, I doubt they'll pander to the aging fanbase that CBS knows it has to replace with fresh blood.

Star Trek IV beat TNG to the punch.

Outside of which universe it takes place in, it's the tone of the show that's going to be important. I imagine it's going to be a war show like latter DS9 right? Something less aimed at nerds basically?

They aren't going to go & do scifi where they go collect soil samples & teach rock monsters how to love. It's going to be about heroically shooting phasers at things.

Outside of that, are they aiming at kids, or are they going to go Game of Thrones with lots of blood & sex? I mean it's on their own internal network so they don't have to worry about TV rating systems right? Trek + bewbs anyone?

The whole diversity thing isn't really that big of a deal anymore. It was innovative in the sixties, by the time they got around to Sisko/Janeway everyone had pretty much stopped caring anyway. Besides, bisexual crippled midget Slavs are at the front of the line, goddammit!

I'm aware of that. My point was not that TNG did it first, but rather they played up the character as the youngest/greatest new Starfleet captain ever.

She was also killed about 3 minutes later.

^ Scott wasn't killed. The bluegill parasite left her body, but there's no proof this resulted in her death (Admiral Quinn survived being taken over - and subsequently being shot by a phaser set on kill - so she probably did as well).

Sure, we never see Scott get up and walk around after that, but that's only because there's no more scenes in the banquet room where she was taken down.
