New Trek Series to begin streaming on CBS All Access in 2017

A new Trek series is coming. The series will be helmed by Alex Kurtzman the writer or Star Trek 2009. The how will not be focusing on Kirk and crew.

Since the show will be headed by Kurtzman there is a strong likelihood that this show will be in the NuTrek universe and not the prime but the article does not specify. The article also does not say what time period it will be in.

There's a thread about this in the Future of Trek forum, btw. [EDIT: And another thread in the General Trek Discussion forum] Perhaps it's best to conduct discussion of the new series there for the time being, until we learn more about the setting.

Also: the series is not coming to CBS network TV, but rather to their streaming service, CBS All Access. I'll modify your thread title accordingly.

I am NOT paying ANOTHER subscription service, ESPECIALLY CBS ( greedy fracks!) to watch a new Star Trek series.
And if Kurtzman and Lidelof are doing this, it's going to be a spin-off of the fracked up JJ Trek Verse for sure!
JJ really ruined new Trek and new Trek movies for me.
CBS not airing this on their regular primetime network schedule I think is going to spell early cancellation of this new series.
I am sure I am NOT going to be the only Trek fan who is not going to shell out cash to a greedy nework to watch a franchise I am sure they are STILL making money on.
They have already lost one paid viewership before this even airs! I am sure there will be a LOT more fans in the NO pay for new Trek series category.
I won't be the only one in this category!

I look forward to seeing where this goes. It'll be nice to get excited about Trek as a series again.

Thanks for the fix. I was excited and though it said CBS. I guess we have to pay to see it. :(

For new shows, I watch on Amazon. For old shows, or older episodes of new shows, I watch Netflix. As long as episodes are also available for streaming the next day on Amazon, I'm all set. If not, well, I guess I'll get to see what the CBS All Access library has all access to.

I definitely won't pay for yet another streaming service. If it eventually ends up on Netflix, I'll watch it that way.

That said, it's way too early for me to have much of an opinion. Frankly, I'm surprised, because I really wasn't expecting to see a Trek series ever again. I'm intrigued that he says it will be introducing new characters; I wonder when/where it will be set.

I will not pay $6 to see a new Star Trek series, said fans sitting in their $300 replicas of Kirk's command chair, banging their fists hard enough to disturb $5,000 in ship models on the knickknack shelves.

You're right that it comes across as silly. Six bucks a month is a drop in the bucket compared to what I've spent on Trek over the decades.

I have no problem with paying money to see the series. It's who I pay the money TO that is the sticking point.

Like I said in the other thread, I will happily pay the iTunes Store a one-time fee per season, so I can get Series VI on an iTunes season pass. I'll pay it even if it costs more than what this subscription would have cost. I'm sure iTunes will eventually get the show, so I'm not worried about that.

The reasons I wouldn't go for CBS All Access to see this show aren't exactly earth-shattering, I admit, but they are important:

- All Access requires Adobe Flash, which I don't use
- It's a monthly subscription, and I also steer clear of those. Once you stop subscribing, you lose access to the show; whereas on an iTunes pass, you get to keep every episode, on whichever of your devices you wish.
- It's to a company that I've never done business with before
- And since I would have no use for any show OTHER than Series VI, I don't think this $6/month would be a wise use of my money. If there were other shows I'd watch on All Access, it might be, but not for just one show.

Agreed. Flash required is a deal killer for me and I do not care for their business model at CBS.
If they are assuming that putting Star Trek on that All Access setup will drive enough people over to it to make it successful they are screwed. If it was available on Hulu or Netflix that is one thing, but I am not about to pay six dollars a month to watch a show- especially if I lose all access to what I have paid for later on should I chose to discontinue paying six dollars every month to them.

Then use the App or get a Roku. Watching in an internet browser is just one way to see it.
and I do not care for their business model at CBS.
You mean, the same business model that Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu all do?
If they are assuming that putting Star Trek on that All Access setup will drive enough people over to it to make it successful they are screwed.
Well, I'm sure they're not thinking that. They're probably thinking "Star Trek and all the other stuff we're going to put on there..."

If it was available on Hulu or Netflix that is one thing,
So those business models are ok?

but I am not about to pay six dollars a month to watch a show- especially if I lose all access to what I have paid for later on should I chose to discontinue paying six dollars every month to them.
That's what you'd have to do for any streaming service.

Sounds like you're just looking for reasons not to like it.

I think CBS is incredibly smart for doing this. They're probably banking, or certainly betting, on the idea that streaming delivery is the future of television. If most other stations begin to offer paid subscription streaming services -- and they're already starting to -- this will make cable and satellite less attractive because you can then pick and choose which specific stations you want to spend your money on. And with streaming, all of their shows become available on demand. No need for DVR ever again. Just get a Roku, Apple TV or some other streaming stick or device and you're set. And make sure the device you get supports all of the apps (stations) you want.

At worst, you can wait until the end of each season, purchase the subscription for the price of a lunch combo and binge watch the entire season, then cancel your subscription at the end of the month and do that each season.

I bet they'll end up making the older episodes of this new series available on Netflix or Amazon (or whatever new streaming service is popular when the time comes) by the beginning of each new season. See, they'll need some way to get viewers who aren't subscribing to CBS to sample the show, so I bet something like that happens. Plus, selling the show to a Netflix-type service is another way for CBS to make money. So if you're willing to wait a bit, I bet the options become available.

Frankly, I don't really get why some people are so up in arms about CBS All Access. It is streaming service just like Netflix, Hulu etc and no one complains about those. But suddenly when CBS offers us a show on their streaming service, it is a problem?
