TOS: Child of Two Worlds - Pre-Release Discussion

Re: TOS: Child of Two Worlds - Discussion

Great Spock Cover art. Definitely looking forward to getting this book .:techman:

Re: TOS: A Child of Two Worlds - Discussion

Note: The Rift starts out in Pike's era, for the first few chapters, but then jumps ahead to Kirk and his five-year-mission, so it's not a wholly Pike-centric novel.
Actually, one small correction: after the Pike-era sequence, The Rift jumps forward not to Kirk's five-year mission, but to the post-Star Trek V-era; one of the very few books to take place during that particular time frame, and (along with the Pike section) one of the reasons I like this book so much.

Oops. I stand corrected.

And that's me looking like a pedant. Sorry about that - I do get carried away sometimes but I don't mean to be churlish.

Oh, no offense taken. I was just humbly admitting that my memory failed me there. No irritation or sarcasm intended. Thanks for the correction, sincerely.

Hell, I pedantically corrected somebody else on a point of BATMAN trivia just a few hours ago . . . :)

Hi Greg,

As a fan of D.C.Fontana's Vulcan's Glory, I was curious how "compatible" your book is with that one. For example, do you use Caitlin Barry as the Chief Engineer?

Thank and have fun,

Caitlin Berry is definitely the Chief Engineer in my book, and has a couple of big scenes.

Thanks for asking!

That sounds great. It will be great to have another story that ties into D.C. Fontana's Pike crew. The only other two stories I know of that already do are Peter David's The Rift and DC Comics' To Walk the Night (in so far as Scotty serving during Pike's time).

I am in the middle of a TMP era novel marathon right now and when I'm done I plan on reading this along with your 2 TFF/TUC era novels: Foul Deeds Will Rise and Miasma.

Is it too much to ask if Scotty is in this book too? Or should I just wait and see? It's not easy to be patient when your looking forward to enjoying something sometimes.

Thanks and have fun,

Scotty is not in the book. The bit about a young Scotty serving under Pike is something that pretty much every other Pike novel has ignored, so I did the same. But, yes, I tried to read all the other Pike novels before writing this book.

And I'm working a project for next year involving Number One . . ..

Re: TOS: Child of Two Worlds - Discussion

Wasn't there a Kirk era novel that had a little bit of Pike/Vina on Talos 4. The telepathic aliens that let them stay there were able to let Pike know what was going on with Spock and the Enterprise. I can't recall the title.

I believe it was published after Star Trek 5 as it had Kirk using his rock climbing skills. And I think Spock had been bitten or stung by some native creature.

Michael Jan Friedman's Legacy. There's a mystery that goes back to Pike's time, and we also see the Talosians telling Pike about what's going on (as I recall).

Re: TOS: Child of Two Worlds - Discussion

A question for you, Greg. Do you use any of the characters in the Marvel Comics' Early Voyages series in this book?

The Indian woman (whose name escapes me at the moment) is serving on the bridge throughout.

Basically, there was no way to reconcile all the different versions of Pike's crew we've seen in the books and comics, so I cherry-picked the parts that worked for this book . ..
