I wasn't surprised Jerome was killed. I was surprised the killed him so soon. Though, I guess I shouldn't have been. It's the same old Gotham story: the ended the character/plot that was working for one that isn't. It's the same thing they did over and over again last year with Fish.
Jerome had a lot of potential (Joker or not.), but they flushed it all down the toilet so they could spoon feed us a poorly written, poorly acted trite, uninteresting, and uninspired bad guy and his silly Dr. Evilian plot. The guy has no charisma, no personality, and none of the quirkiness that make for great villains. He's super generic, and his whole background/grievance comes strait off the shelves of Clichés R Us.
And by the looks of things, he's going to be around all year long.
On top of all that, Gordon, Bullock, and Bruce should never have made it out of the episode alive. It's stretching believability to the max.
Alfred just came off as creepy and awkward.
And, just like early last season, Selena's presence was utterly pointless aside from they needed to fill Bicondova's appearance quota.

The actor who plays Galavan was really good on Orphan Black...so its the writing/directing....
So now at this rate, we can expect Bullock to go in 2 episodes, Ms. Kringle in 4...

...until it turned out they didn't have a plan at all.
EDIT: Don't forget how badly Heller screwed up Red John. He pulled the red herring stunt on The Mentalist as well, and the actual Red Jon, after being hyped for six consecutive seasons, turned out rather unremarkable. Especially compared to the first red herring (played by Bradley Whitford) who had some actual sinister charisma to him that Heller decided to waste.

I know exactly how you feel. I was that way with Voyager and Enterprise. I tended to have them on while I was doing something else, so I could at least be conversant on the episodes here, but didn't have to pay enough attention that I wanted to put my foot through the TV.
I wish this show had a little less of the Burton-esque stylistics and was more of a straightforward crime thriller. Or still gothic, but less silly.
Oh yeah, and there's going to be a MAGICIAN at the children's benefit... just in case we didn't hear them the first fifty times they said that.

I thought they would use that opportunity for a nod to Zatara (who taught Bruce sleight of hand, escape artistry, etc. in the comics) but nope, I was wrong.
I gave up on this show a long time ago but this casting is kind of cool.

There is a pretty strong resemblance between Reubens and Taylor. So it works even aside from the in-joke.

Personally, the moment I got a DVR I immediately stopped watching shows on the day they air.
I look at them very carefully as I fast forward past them, letting them seep into my subconscious and impact my purchasing decisions 
I can only imagine that commercials are crafted in a such a way nowadays that they're primarily made to catch the eye of someone fast-forwarding past them.
