X-Men: Apocalypse announced for May 2016

My thought is they'll plan ahead so it'll be set when they plan to intersect. So, if the next X-Men movie after Apocalypse in in 1990 and they plan on having Gambit in it, it'll be set in 1990.

From what the article says, I wonder if Fox is looking at Gambit as a potential replacement for Wolverine now that Jackman's retiring from the role, taking over his slot as the edgy antihero in future movies. Which is not a connection I ever would've made.
Gambit is edgy?

I didn't say he was, I just wondered if maybe Fox was intending something like that. He is a thief and all, an antihero with a troubled and secretive past. And he has a destructive superpower. As I said, I would never have thought of Gambit as a good analog for Wolverine; but the fact that Fox seems to be trying to build up the character at the same time that Jackman is about to retire his character makes me wonder if they're trying to make him into one.

Besides, from Fox's perspective, it's more about the actors than the characters. The movies' Wolverine is far more of a handsome leading man type than the original character, because he's been modified to fit Jackman. Apparently it's Channing Tatum, not Gambit, that the studio is interested in; I gather he's become kind of a big draw lately (although I still have no clue who he is), so maybe they're hoping he can fill the screen-idol role once Jackman's gone. And Gambit just happens to be the vehicle for that, for whatever reason.

To me Gambit is a goofy guy with horrible Cajun accent, absurd trench coat and OTT personality who throws exploding cards. So, not edgy. :p

I could see them trying to turn Tatum into the face of the franchise now that Hugh Jackman is retiring from the Wolverine role. Even if Gambit isn't quite on Wolverine's level of popularity, Tatum is at least as popular, if not more, than Jackman. Other than maybe Jennifer Lawrence, who might be done with the franchise, he's probably the biggest star involved with the franchise. There is also Ryan Reynolds, but I don't know if they're really going to want to use the star of a hard R movie as the face of the entire franchise, which does tend to be at a PG-13 level.

Does your familiarity come from the comics, one of the TV shows, or something else?

Comics. Mostly from the 90s. Most characters created by the future Image boys when they were at Marvel grate on me. This one has a Claremont accent to boot.

I'm an adult! I don't watch cartoons!! ;)

The 90s cartoon did a perfect job of replicating Claremontian accents, though.

I hope so. If they don't come back it will be interesting to see what direction they take the franchise in. Would they just focus on the younger old characters and new characters from Apocalypse? What about Xavier, would they just recast him again, or change the mentor figure to a new character? While I would miss Fassbender, it might be nice to get rid of Magnet and focus harder on new villains.
