Fifth Movie

Even when Trek actors do come to a larger convention, they don't pull the numbers that you might think.
One of the indelible images from a con I went to was Tim Russ dozing off at his table all by himself while a line 60 people long waited to talk to Bruce Boxleitner.

It's tough going to these conventions, where the one-time King just isn't popular anymore.

I think the right phrase is "AS popular." There was obviously enough support for the convention organizers to ask Mr. Russ to attend, and enough reason for Tim to bother showing up. However, it was pretty clear he (and Brent Spiner) weren't in the top tier anymore.

Couldn't agree more. Shatner and (formerly) Nimoy? Still top drawer. And in this country, Patrick Stewart would be too, but that's it. Everyone else, from George Takei to Tim Russ, from Jonathan Frakes to Avery Brooks, is a mid-length queue at best. Probably still make a tidy profit on overpriced autographs but they're hardly the main billing for the event. Those (like Kate Mulgrew) who draw a crowd today do so for more recent work. When I met Armin Shimmerman at Collectormania he told me he was signing nearly twice as much Buffy stuff as Trek stuff and at that point Trek was still on the air.

I've noticed the same decline with Stargate, my other big fandom. The guests, cosplay, and merchandise has waned considerably since Universe came off the air. There used to be a guarantee of 3 or 4 SG teams with rubber P90s at Collectormania, or LFCC; now, many have moved on. Ditto BSG. Not all bad, of course, Twilight went the same way.

The big mega-conventions are the order of the day and they are heavily influenced by what is on TV and in cinemas now. The guests, costumes and stalls are Game of Thrones themed, or Hunger Games, or even smaller but going concerns like Gotham. If you got the cast of the nuTrek series in, particularly the big names, they'd be popular because they're current. But a lot of convention goers today were barely in primary school when Voyager was on. They're just not that interested.

I haven't seen you on TV in a while, come to think of it.

ETA: More recently than Armin Shimmerman though, to be fair.

Also, they were going to put Sisko in First Contact but thought DS9 wasn't popular enough and people wouldn't like it.

They are crazy. That would have been AWESOME.

And some of the things people say here is weird.

Enterprise wasn't a good show? mmk, yeah, that's why I burned through as many as 8 episodes in a day when watching the series... because it wasn't good and all.

Maybe you'd be happier with watching some lovely shows on Bravo, like the Real Housewives.

Congrats for liking something bad then.

My wife, who cries at anything, didn't even cry over that.

So it devolves into this. Squiggy, you've made valid points but continually crapping on someone else's opinion does not help your case. Bruno, you have a point of view and your tastes - be happy with your choices.

Yes I understand that this is what happens here, but sometimes pissing matches get pointless.

Um.... FC has a 92% on rotten tomatoes... not that this should really matter
Never placed too much credence in rotten tomatoes, while results are on rare occasions based on thousands providing input, usually it's a couple of hundred people or dozens.

That 92%, given the total ticket sales, what percentage of viewers were a part of that "92%."

Fraction of one percent?

Budget $45 million Box office $146,027,888
In what universe is more than 3 x the budget not considered financially successful?

I was burnt out on the Trek spinoffs at the time Nemesis came out. So I didn't get around to watching it until a few years later. I found it to be "meh." It's a professional editor's (Baird) vanity project to try to become more recognized as a director.

Spiner's franchise-spanning crossover idea would have been interesting for a comic book aimed at Trek fans. But for a feature film, I think that kind of story would rely too heavily on familiarity with the various series, being a turnoff for general moviegoers.

As for the rest of the discussion... once in a while I like to turn off my brain for a couple of hours and enjoy First Contact as a popcorn action monster/zombie flick. But to me, it isn't Star Trek.

Well the DS9 ratings support that. They had to get Worf into it because it's a TNG movie, so they had the Defiant for about 15 seconds, a throwaway line, and then it was like Worf had never left.
They are crazy. That would have been AWESOME.

It would have been terrible. There's no place for Sisko in that movie, with an already crowded cast.

Enterprise was heavily criticised from day one for being banal, unadventurous, uninspired, and yet another clone of a show that was by that point nearly 20 years old. All with good reason. It got cancelled after 4 seasons when even Voyager managed a full run. That's not weird. That's the result of being an outdated and poorly written show.

I couldn't have said it better, and I agree with those criticisms.

okay, if we're going to play that game....

I like TOS the least. I relate to it the least. All five series are great, but I go TNG-ENT-DS9-VOY-TOS

And it's REALLY hard with the top three.... but I'd set it at that order.

Not surprisingly, I disagree. The commentary is too simplistic IMHO and overlooks the myriad of reasons for the shortened 4 season run (lots of other threads on this topic).

Personally I choose to enjoy the wealth that the ST universe has to offer. Everything has a high water mark and it may be that time has passed by what we all knew as Star Trek -- at least in that form / format . It may well need to change with the times to find an audience. Unfortunately, ST may never enjoy the popularity it once had.

To the original intent of this post though -- I would have watched a 5th TNG movie, but I doubt it would have been a box-office hit for many of the reasons already mentioned.
