NBC orders Taken prequel to series

It's being billed as a prequel though it takes place in the modern day and Bryan Mills is not married or a father yet.

So, it's just a generic CIA action spy show which has been done a dozen times before, and the only thing that makes it relevant to the plot of the films will be missing. There was nothing inherently interesting about Mills as a character, it was just about his relentless drive to save his daughter.

It's all about the name recognition, which is for one flawed but enjoyable movie and two terrible ones, and one catchphrase that they'll awkwardly say in the trailers and the pilot and then you'll never hear again.

We won't even have the benefit of Neeson playing the role, so the compelling aspect of a retired guy going around kicking ass isn't even there. No one's surprised that a young dude can kick ass, and he won't be operating on his own without support, so there's no underdog factor to root for even.

I'll wait to see how it looks, but it seems like it's starting out from a flawed premise.

Locutus, just want to remind you we were laughing at the premise of Sleepy Hollow. Maybe this can have something more to hook us, won't know until it premieres.

*A generic CIA action spy show with a very particular set of skills.

ETA: Actually that could be the series title:

"This fall A Very Particular Set of Skills is coming to NBC."

I don't know how you make this in to a TV series but if you do, I will find it and I will watch it.

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But I am learning a very particular set of skills, skills that will someday make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, but I probably won't know how to find you and ... what was that ransom again?

OH, Taken. I thought this was that alien abduction Spielberg thing, but Liam Neeson shooting people, gotcha.

It might have legs, but honestly whatever good will that brand had was destroyed by Taken 2 and 3.

"NBC has given a scripted commitment with a hefty penalty" What does this mean in English?

The showrunners of the first series to be cancelled on the network are set loose on NBC's private island to be hunted for sport by the executives.

Or by Liam Neeson himself.

I'd totally watch that, BTW.

Now that's a concept for a show! Liam Neeson playing Liam Neeson hunting people for sport on a private island. Best. Show. Ever.

They should cast the guy who played the younger Ra's Al Ghul in the flashback scenes in "The Dark Knight Rises."

Ha, I was thinking that too.

Perhaps the series will explain why a former CIA man has a thick North Antrim accent (an in-universe explanation that doesn't involve Neeson's hopelessness with other accents).
