I'm doing my utmost to create such. Consider this market research. I've read a couple threads that seemed mostly tongue in cheek or complaining with a few real suggestions. In this thread I would like just the real suggestions only.

I'm working here to do market research and on Writer's Beat to perfect my writing. Keep it to the point please.

Click the boxes you agree with and leave the ones you disagree with unchecked.

1) Why is Star Trek worth having this site? Other sci-fi shows have been forgotten. Why hasn't Star Trek?

2) What is your personal favorite aspect of the shows that have been?

3) Do you want a familiar crew or people you've never met?

4) Why did Enterprise get wrapped up as a holonovel?

5) Did Data or Kirk die?

6) Do you like the character interaction?

7) or the fights and sexy aliens?

8) And does the fact alien planets in Star Trek view Terran ways as alien add to it's appeal?

9) None of the above I'll explain in my post.

10) Some/all of the above and what I'm adding with my post.

I'd have done this as a poll, but I can't figure out how to do that. Oh wait. I figured it out!

Still. I'd also have sent a few PMs by now except I can't figure out how to do that either.

Hope to hear from you all.

ST has had a broad appeal that other shows have not. Even other popular past shows. I think one reason many folks might cringe at is that it (TOS) was cancelled too early. "Always leave them wanting more". It created a need for fans to further explore - and thus you get the ST conventions. That infrastructure was already in place when TNG came out and folks were still hungry for more. It really was the birth place of cosplay - and it had carried the franchise.

2) What is your personal favorite aspect of the shows that have been?

Accessibility. The shows are geeky - that makes the geeks happy. The shows are drama - that make the drama freaks happy. There is a universe with at least some continuity in which to fantasize - making other happy.

3) Do you want a familiar crew or people you've never met?

I don't mind crossover - but I want a totally new crew.

4) Why did Enterprise get wrapped up as a holonovel?

Just a bad call really. It happens.

5) Did Data or Kirk die?

We shall see.

6) Do you like the character interaction?

Obviously

7) or the fights and sexy aliens?

Really, there were not that many sexy aliens. At least not enough for my tastes.
8) And does the fact alien planets in Star Trek view Terran ways as alien add to it's appeal?

When they do, yes. but often they don't.

Thank you to all who have voted so far. Keep voting though. Poll is open for ten more days. I'll be pitching ideas somewhere near/after the end of that.

1) Star Trek should be about the optimism and hope for a better future, where all out current differences mean nothing to more "evolved sensibilities" leaving us free to explore, so find answers to the bigger questions in life as well as finding new questions that need answers. Even when it is at its darkest, that should be when the glimmer of what we can become will shine through brightest.

2) When characters come alive and feel real, regardless of what prosthetics they are wearing. A well-written, well-acted character should make me feel something (even revulsion) for them no matter what world they are from. Showing an arc/growth for them as well over the run of a show (such as happened with Kira). Characters that are just there to tick a token box (Kim, Mayweather) really add nothing, stagnate and drag everything else down. I also love alien crew members--the more the merrier!

3) If by 'familiar' you mean canon characters reprising their role, then no (unless it is a full proper reboot [none of that "alternate timeline" crap], in such a way that we get a bisexual Kirk). If it's regarding how the crew interact at the beginning, this I'm flexible on. In some ways it's good to have them all meeting for the first time, but then I think of Firefly and how the crew were already a tight bunch, but the so-called passengers were new to the ship/situation, so gave us an introduction to them. If written properly either way works as I'll come to like/love/loathe them in time.

4) That was a terrible idea thinking that fans needed to be beaten round the head and shown that ENT was a part of the larger continuity/universe of Trek--even though pretty much all of season four had already done that. A finale should always be the last 'hurrah' for the characters of it, not shoehorning in a couple of alumni for no real reason. So in this regard I discount TATV as the finale.

5) Yup. Dead and buried. Next question.

6) The show is about character interaction. They should be friendships, conflicts, love triangles, arguments, everything that people do. That is what the focus needs to be on.

7) Some action will of course be needed, but not every situation is to be resolved with phasers or fists, these people are explorers and diplomats, have them find intelligent solutions. So long as those 'sexy' aliens are an equal split of men and women then I don't mind a few now and then. If its just women in skimpy/tight outfits then no, go perv on something else.

8) Humans are aliens too. More should be done looking at situations from alien perspective, as not all with have humanist views and ideals (for example in "Rocks and Shoals" where Garak says that 'humans have rules' in fighting a war, whereas he has a far more practical outlook for victory). Looking at how other races would approach the tough choices, giving options human characters would never consider because of their ethics would only add to all of them.

9/10) One more thing to leave out of the next Trek: women dressed differently. Troi, Kira, Seven and T'Pol have all shown women can retain their curves and feminine appeal just as well (if not hugely better) in standard uniform, so there is absolutely no need to have them in anything else when on duty. One thing that has to be in the next Trek: show different orientations. Trek should hang its head in shame for not showing that there are other sexualities out there, other than heterosexual. If this is left out yet again, then the PTB will have a lot of explaining as to just why it's being left out. That being said, it shouldn't be the defining aspect of a character, just one minute facet of them--I want to see it, I don't want it rubbed in my face (well at least not on TV,).

Hope that helps.

I think Janeway was one of the best dressed women in Trek-because she looked dignified in that uniform. :techman:

I'm gonna mix a bunch of what I do and don't want.

1) No deuxmachina, I want a plot where actions have consequence.

2) No Reboot switches, things that happen in earlier episodes come up again. If the captain gets infected by an alien virus, there will be signs of it later on in the serious. NOTE: this isn't an excuse for people to get random super powers or the like.

3) An overall ark, however not wars or the like. I want an arc that could fit within one singular movie. I.e. Do a full season of the genesis project-search for spock. Another season on VGer etc. Have one episode of discover one ep of survival one ep of politics onee ep of a searh etc, etc etc. A vareity of episode plots varying all on one arc.

4) New perspectives on past themes in trek. In TOS the captain is the maverick hero, show how other officers would view him.

5) Take take it seriously, I know that is alot to ask, however trek comes back don't ruin it by making it a parody of itself COUGH COUGH VOYAGER!!!

Well I think people good looking uniforms is of crucial importance. Not to simply look good, but to really translate the level of prestige that comes with being an officer in universe.

Aslo include male actors that are in very good shape just to proove the point.

Bring back the dresses and get men to wear em just to proove the point.

Not sure how "market research" will improve your writing.

1) Why is Star Trek worth having this site? Other sci-fi shows have been forgotten. Why hasn't Star Trek?
It's popular and part of our culture. If anyone knew why they'd make a fortune.

2) What is your personal favorite aspect of the shows that have been?
The characters.

3) Do you want a familiar crew or people you've never met?
I'm good with either. Maybe set it in a era that can have both.

4) Why did Enterprise get wrapped up as a holonovel?
It didn't.

5) Did Data or Kirk die?
As of this writing, yes.

6) Do you like the character interaction?
Yes, it makes things interesting.

7) or the fights and sexy aliens
?Yes.

Why would it be either or?

8) And does the fact alien planets in Star Trek view Terran ways as alien add to it's appeal
Commentary on Human nature is an interesting way to discuss humanity

Pitching to who? Us?

In response to Nerys Myk it's CBS who'll be receiving the pitch. This poll establishes fan preferences, David. Why it's here. So I can try to incorporate aspects the fans are interested in as well as have something to show CBS as indication of why this franchise is worth the risk.

Bryn. I do my best to maintain a balance of sexual equality and keeping some of the male audience watching. And the uniforms are standard in my mind.

Hope this answers all your questions. I hope to hear more from you all.

I hope you have agent and solid background in film and TV production, because even guys with solid track records can't get CBS interested.

I also doubt CBS will care about your "market research". They aren't looking for shows that will appeal to us, but for shows that will appeal to the general audience.

You also might want to looking to finding a proofreader. Some of your questions are oddly structured. Fine for a post on the net, but not for a professional presentation.

Good luck with that dude. Unless you're already friends with someone high up at CBS that might have a say in getting a new show produced, more than likely you'll be doing well to get a janitor to listen to your pitch. If you can even get an appointment with one of them. I here they work late nights.

1) Why is Star Trek worth having this site? Other sci-fi shows have been forgotten. Why hasn't Star Trek?

I think the key, as someone else noted, is optimism. The idea of a positive future is something that is very appealing. There seems to be a lot in the way of shows that try to recapture that, even in the ways of some of the Trek spinoffs, that just doesn't capture that.

2) What is your personal favorite aspect of the shows that have been?

Really, it's the idea that despite our differences, we can work together. I think that's a pretty fantastic thing. Once upon a time, I cared about the tech and the aliens and all the kewl explosions, but now if you can give me a good story where people with fundamental differences can get along, you've got me. Also, a story that keeps moving and has a balance of action and drama.

3) Do you want a familiar crew or people you've never met?

Unless it's a true reboot, I don't really love the idea of seeing faces we've already seen before. Let's break new ground.

4) Why did Enterprise get wrapped up as a holonovel?

The writers of Enterprise made a lot of missteps. That was the last. It's unfortunate, but it's how it went.

5) Did Data or Kirk die?

Yes, sir. Could they be resurrected? I'd rather a death stick, but it could happen.

6) Do you like the character interaction?
It's kind of the key to good drama.

7) or the fights and sexy aliens?

Eh. I mean, I like them, but they're not the most important to me.

8) And does the fact alien planets in Star Trek view Terran ways as alien add to it's appeal?

Well, if you're going to do alien worlds, let's do alien worlds. With alien-looking aliens. Not humans with bumps on their heads.

I1) Why is Star Trek worth having this site? Other sci-fi shows have been forgotten. Why hasn't Star Trek?

Not sure if I can answer that question. Stories are an essential part of the human experience. I would say that the better the story the longer it will live on.

2) What is your personal favorite aspect of the shows that have been?

Probably going on an adventure.Watching these crews encounter strange things and seeing how they react.

3) Do you want a familiar crew or people you've never met?

I really dislike the tendency to tie things neatly together in Star Trek (more so in fandom). the galaxy is amazingly vast, yet it is made to seem so small. Take for example V'ger. Among fandom V'ger was connected with the Borg. But that just seems so disappointing to me. I would rather have this epic-cool robot planet out there rather than, "Oh, that was just the Borg."

To bring this back to characters. I would rather see new characters we have an entire galaxy full of unique individuals, why should we be seeing the same people over and over again.

4) Why did Enterprise get wrapped up as a holonovel?

Couldn't care less. Enterprise is not part of Star Trek.

5) Did Data or Kirk die?

Can Data die? I would have preferred a death for Kirk that was better. But it doesn't bother me too much to have either character stay dead.

6) Do you like the character interaction?

Primarily yes, the stories are about people with unique views and experiences. I enjoy seeing how they can come together as a team, grow, and overcome challenges.

7) or the fights and sexy aliens?

I would prefer not having my entertainment promote bestiality.

8) And does the fact alien planets in Star Trek view Terran ways as alien add to it's appeal?

It most certainly does. I enjoy having a critical eye cast upon the most basic assumptions of our culture. Star Trek should make the strange seem familiar and the familiar seem strange.

Something I wish Star Trek could have more of is just the wonder of space. Did you know there it a planet made out of diamonds? Or a planet with glass shards storms? There's a planet almost twice the size of Jupiter that orbits is sun in under four days.

In any future incarnation of Star Trek I want to have my mind blown be the weirdness of the alien life and encounters. I want to have my jaw drop at the wonder of the cosmos.

"Bestiality" is sex with an animal, sex with a non-Human intelligent being would not be bestiality.

I could agree with that. Is there a more generic term for sex with another species?

If intelligence is required for acceptability of sexual relations, does that make intercourse with apes and dolphins and other terrestrial non-human intelligent species acceptable?
