I was reflecting on comic books today I realized there's almost nothing I'm excited about reading from Marvel aside from the primary Secret Wars mini. I'm pretty sick of all these alternate world stories. I think the only one I truly liked was Civil War and maybe A-Force. I can't wait for this prolonged step away from the real world to be over and to be back in "normal" continuity...

The only SW related books I've bought (other than the main event) are Silver Surfer, because SW hasn't disrupted it's regular run, and Ant-Man: Last Days, because I didn't realize it was a SW crossover when I bought it.

Other than Star Wars, the only Marvel I've been getting during SW are Daredevil, SHIELD, the 50th anniversary SHIELD issues, Ant-Man, Hawkeye and something I'm forgetting because they aren't SW related.

I'm deeply concerned about the future of the Avengers franchise. I'm not seeing any A list talent on any of the post-Secret Wars titles. It'd be a real shame if Avengers went to seed because I have loved the hell out of the past decade of Avengers comics. When I was a kid they were the crappiest super team in all of comicdom and they've been the coolest since 2004.

i'm reading a lot of the tie-ins but really they're all What If type stories. some are pretty enjoyable. some not so much. i'm ready for SW to be over with so we can get back to really for reals stories.

and Mark Waid isn't A list talent? he's writing ANAD Avengers.

All the Secret Wars crossover comics are Formerly Alternate Earth Bullshit that have been relocated to the same Earth en mass, squashed together onto a Super Earth called Battleworld. Secret War's "Battleworld" is a patchwork quilt built from the surviving chunks of a few hundred alternate Earths Doom whimsically thought were worth preserving.

Everyone of these conflicting stories (the tie-in comics) in Secret Wars is happening simultaneously in real time with the rest of the tie in comics, because there seems to be an entire "America" in Each Battleworld zone which simultaneously accepts that the Battleworld Zone walls are there, that Doom is God, and that what should be the rest of the planet consistent to what their "alternate Earth" theme says it should be is, still is, despite that there seems to be some serious disagreement about what year it is from zone to zone.

Oh.

I thought Battleworld was a shitty name for a planet.

Sure I've always remembered that that's what the Beyonder (who was a child in some ways) called the planet he built in 1984 (Secret Wars I) for Earths heroes and villains to fight on, but I only just got it now that Doom has a solid sense of humour.

Calling this Super Earth "Battleworld" is Doom telling the Beyonders (who he has already murdered) to go #### themselves.

So, how do you guys feel about Amadeus Cho being Hulk now, and Mary Jane P̶a̶r̶k̶e̶r̶ Watson being Tony Stark's new lady?

It seems like all the Marvel mains, have been replaced by other characters.

Falcon is Captain America.

Jane Foster is Thor.

Miles Morales leads on Spider-Man (no longer Ultimate).

well, its not like the Spidey books were using MJ. at least not actively. oh, MJ has a night club now. wooo. everytime she shows up its just a reminder of what Peter and the fans can never have.

ever since Planet Hulk Marvel has been desperate for some new spin on Hulk. this is just the latest. i like Cho, and i'm a big Hulk fan so i'll give it a chance.

I like Amadeus Cho. I'd buy any book he starred in (especially if written by Greg Pak) whether he was the new Hulk or not.

As for Stark/MJ-- that's good enough reason as any to avoid Iron Man like the plague.

When were you a kid? I' am in the process of re-reading Roger Stern's Avengers (230ish to 285ish, mid 80s) and I would put it up against anybody's run on any book.

From his poignant wrap-up of the fall of Hank Pym story started by Jim Shooter through his "Absolute Vision" story and "Legacy of Thanos" (which introduced Nebula) his Kang story capped off with the epic "Under Siege" and "Assault on Olympus" arcs.

The book may not have gotten X-Men numbers, but Stern's Avengers was easily the center-point of the Marvel Universe at the time. It casually and unobtrusively crossed over with Byrne's Fantastic Four several times, Dr. Strange, Walt Simonson's epic "Surtur Saga" in Thor, Amazing Spider-Man, Alpha Flight, X-Factor and others without having to turn it into an "event".

He really touched upon almost every nook and cranny of the Marvel Universe as it was at the time and it was all in a day's work.

Truly, I consider Roger Stern to be one of the most underappreciated greats of the business.

When were you a kid? I' am in the process of re-reading Roger Stern's Avengers (230ish to 285ish, mid 80s) and I would put it up against anybody's run on any book.

Early 90s, maybe? The "Operation Galactic Storm" era was pretty lousy.

Yeah, things actually went downhill pretty fast after Stern's departure. Simonson's run was cut too short because of editorial edicts. He had made the interesting choice of bringing in the then free agent Reed and Sue Richards onto the team and was building up to a leadership confrontation between Captain America and an oblivious Reed when he was told that Reed and Sue were returning to the FF and to drop them from the story.

Then John Byrne came in and took over both Avengers and West Coast Avengers, which seemed at the time to be a franchise saving move, but in hindsight, Byrne didn't bring much to the table that was memorable or long-lasting. Then an over the hill Roy Thomas took over Avengers West Coast and I can't even remember where Avengers went from there.

There are some aspects of the Bomber jacket era which echo the modern film era - the idea of a underpinning infrastructure we've never seen before or really after with support workers and Heroes like Captain American often fighting without their mask as much as with it on (I could be misremembering this...)

I'm actually looking forward to reading Bendis' "Invincible Iron Man" and I have no problem with MJ moving to that book--Slott really wasn't using her much in the first place.


Bendis getting "Avengers" was part of editorials edict to put their premier superhero team as one of their flagship team. I think his run started shortly after Geoff Johns short run. Similar to the way back in 2001 they brought in JMS on Amazing and Morrison on X-Men to re-galvanize those titles.

the Stern era is one of my favorites.

Mine, too! After Stern was fired, the Avengers pretty much went to hell.

The only post-Secret Wars book I'm really looking forward to is Black Knight.

I grew up on comics in the early/mid 90s. I haven't read any of the 80s or 70s Avengers and just a smattering of the 60s stuff.

Oh, the Buseik / Perez run was awesome of course. I was thinking of the early 90s era.
