The dumbest part however, is how Kirk went from cadet to captain. That part made no sense at all.

That cadet-captain promotion at the end annoyed me as well. What was the rush? They were obviously coming back for more movies. Why not take their time to show Kirk evolving and the crew finding their way together?

I agree, Tosk. Cadet Kirk earned the franchise more money in one movie then any Captain Kirk did. People pay for entertainment and Trek and Kirk and friends. I was looking forward to seeing a proper run of prequels and backstory leading up to the beginning of TOS. So I think they threw away a lot of great opportunities for a natural evolution when they had Kirk bypass all those steps.

And FYI: Kirk was Admiral for more than half of the TOS movies, not Captain. People paid to see them anyway.

I'm sure Lt. Kirk and Commander Kirk would've done great. Plus, IMO the whole "leading from your seat" concept is more impressive when you have to save the day without the power of being the Captain.

No. I've seen a new Star Trek movie every few years since I was 4 years old. 36 years later, I've started to recognize a pattern.
