Morning with Neelix

In my journey of binge watching Voyager over the next few months, I sometimes remember things and have questions that some of you fans might be interested in.

On Investigations in Season 2, That is where Neelix starts his show. However, the writers seemed to basically drop the idea and was never brought up in future episodes...what up with that?

First of all, did you guys like that aspect of the show, and do you wish the writing staff could of incorporated it throughout the series from time to time?

I thought it was mildly amusing and potentially hilarious and it should have showed up a few times a season.

I believe we missed a great opportunity for Star Trek to do a daytime television passive aggressive internal multi season story arc. We all wanted this even if we didn't know it and they ignored this opportunity.

I seem to recall a scene in S3 'Macrocosm' where Neelix and Janeway enter ensign Wildman's quarters and find his last Good Morning Voyager installment on constant replay ? I always supposed that was the same show (or a successor of it).

But I agree they could have done a lot more with the idea.

It was originally called A Briefing With Neelix and was introduced purely as a plot point for catching Jonas. After that, they pretty much dropped it (like so many other things in Voyager that might hint at an ongoing story).

It pops up again in Macrocosm but is now called Good Morning Voyager and as far as we know, Samantha Wildman is it's solitary viewer.

I imagine it contained a cooking segment, celebrity gossip (ensign Baxter jerking off in the turbo lift again) and maybe a section where Chakotay showed you how to make your own medicine bundle using nothing but some wires and an old pair of underpants. I also suspect Kim does a four hour piece about his favourite types of carpet.

.... or a video recording of Kim playing the whole crew into a coma with his clarinet, playing a Vulcan :vulcan: piece. Tuvok would be the only one to be interested, but criticizes the dilettantish execution of the musical piece. The Doctor simply switches himself off......

For all we know, Neelix might be doing several segments throughout the day. He might open up with news and weather of the nearest star system, running a shopping show to sell off odds and ends he's salvaged over the years, constant announcements about this weekend's theme brunch in the mess hall, along with his cooking shows and guest interviews. All. Day. Long. The crew are so sick of him on closed circuit all the time, they never watch him anymore.

I think that would have been a nice minor pun (and also very in character for Neelix); a scene in which the crew reacts annoyed to yet another Neelix tell sell show :)

It's a shame Voyager didn't come along a decade later. In this era of webisodes, Morning With Neelix may have actually become a thing.

It was ok for what it was. A plot device. To be honest I am glad this is something they didn't stick with.

Must... stay... silent...

I suspect with Neelix in everybody's face for a prolonged time, either the homocide or suicide rates would have risen and so the show was taken off the air.

It would have been a good idea. If Neelix had been used for actual comic relief he might have been a good character. Instead he was just used to push every other character's buttons and constantly fight with and then reach a better understanding with Tuvok.

I would so watch that!

Yeah, if Voyager would have come out today, there could be all sorts of cool extra features like a second screen experience on your phone or tablet. Get extra info...a live streaming chat...etc. There is a lot that could be done today.

Unfortunately now, we only have the crappy JJ Abrams alternate universe movies with whatever arc that doesn't matter anyway.

It would be nice to see something original that get's back to the stories as a Netflix or Amazon original series...maybe something that covers the Eugenics wars...or something.

I like the idea of the Axanar Productions flick being a series. If you haven't seen that, you can check it out at the following link:

I guess that "A Briefing With Neelix" (which was the name of his daily program) was just another of his whims, something he kept up for a while before it got boring and he found a new obsession.

It showed up in "Investigations" where Michael Jonas finally was revealed as a Kazon spy. Obviously it was there and then Neelix invented this daily program.

Then it was mentioned in the book "The Black Shore" by Greg Cox where the events takes place between the episodes "The Chute" and "Remember" and then it was mentioned in the episode "Macrocosm".

Putting Neelix aside (because, you know, why wouldn't we put him aside), as a ''closed community'' I could see a whole branch of these programs popping up throughout Voyager's seven year journey. It'd be healthy for them to have some kind of on-board relaxation/entertainment apart from the holodeck.

The View(screen): an all female panel show in an 'on the couch' format, discussing all the latest gossip that has come through the transwarp conduits from the Alpha Quadrant.

The Late Shift with Harry Kim: late night talk show hosted by everybody's favorite perpetually ensign Ensign. With musical accompaniment by Lt.Cmdr Tuvok & His Vulcan Backing Band.

Okay, I'll stop now. :p
