The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999!

I think the conversation around the meaning of the word "canon" has run its course for this thread. Please get back to being impressed that there's a new edition of the encyclopedia coming (or being unimpressed, as you choose) :)

I'm sorry, I shouldn't have let my own sense of frustration ramp up and affect the thread. I'm happy to move on. :)

Thanks all for the kind words. Denise and I have been working on this for over a year, and we're pretty excited about it. The 2016 edition of the Star Trek Encyclopedia will be a two-volume set that will indeed merge all the previous content (including the 1999 supplement) into a cohesive document. It will pick up where that one left off, and will incorporate the last 2/3rds of the seventh season of DS9, the last 2/3rds of the fifth season of Voyager, the sixth and seventh seasons of Voyager, all four years of Star Trek: Enterprise, plus Star Trek: Nemesis, Star Trek (2009), and Star Trek: Into Darkness. As someone mentioned uptopic, we are fully integrating the Abrams films into the text, labeling them clearly, just as we did with the Mirror Universe and any other legitimate part of the Trek universe. It is scheduled for release next July.

It makes no sense to exclude TAS. The policy that led to its exclusion from the old edition has been defunct for over two decades. TAS has been referenced in most of the modern series and was an influence on the '09 film. It's included in the "canon-only" Memory Alpha and on StarTrek.com as fully as all the other series are. It's the original onscreen source of Amanda Grayson's last name, the city name ShiKahr, the place name Lunaport, the ship name Klothos, and the Caitian species that's been utilized in TVH and (theoretically) STID. It contains the only onscreen reference to McCoy's daughter. It's the source of at least two visual elements used in TOS Remastered, the city of ShiKahr as seen in "Amok Time" and the freighter ship design used for the Antares in "Charlie X." A Star Trek reference book cannot be complete or comprehensive without including it. So I sincerely hope it is included in the new STE.

Where in Mr. Okuda's post did he say TAS was being excluded?

He didn't mention it when he listed all the other new things that would be included, so it's at least worth asking for clarification -- and expressing the hope that it will be included after all.

I will admit that I find the exclusion of TAS to be odd, and somewhat disappointing. This book should aim to be a definitive reference for all the various Star Trek shows, and TAS was a Star Trek show, so...

And since this was mentioned explicitly:

As someone mentioned uptopic, we are fully integrating the Abrams films into the text, labeling them clearly, just as we did with the Mirror Universe and any other legitimate part of the Trek universe.

Why couldn't TAS be included and just be "labelled clearly" as TAS, so that people who wanted to ignore those entries could easily do so? (Obviously the implication is that TAS is not a "legitimate" part of the Trek universe, but I tend to disagree with that assessment.)

I wonder if it's too late for this to be changed? There's only, what, 11 hours of TAS programming to worry about, and there's still another year until release...

A lot of becker & mayer!'s stuff comes with little extras, anybody know if that will be the case with this?

Agree. :vulcan:

I already asked about TAS on Twitter after it came up in this thread, and he confirmed there that it won't be included.

Damn it! Why in the world not? There is no conceivable reason for that, not anymore, not for over twenty years. And I've already said why I think it's a huge mistake.

Agree. TAS needs to be included! It is an extremely bad decision to not include TAS. :(

And I must ask again - is there a Kindle version?

I'm betting no. They won't want a digital version in the wild while they're trying to sell the $99 version.

Count me as another potential buyer disappointed by the exclusion of TAS.
