Also in that vein -
Queen of Swords
Kung Fu: The Legend Continues

I can't believe I forgot to mention Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?.

(yes, I was older than 10, but the music was catchy and cheerful, and those Rockapella members were so easy on the eyes! ;))

Beverly Hills 90210 (unintentionally funny but cool. Plus Tiffani Amber Thiessen.)

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (best thing Lucas ever did)

Babylon 5 ( those in the know, understand it's just about the best SF show ever made )

Larry Sanders Show ( so sharp)

That 70's Show (funnest comedy and so well cast)

Star Trek: The Next Generation (most likeable Trek ever made; Patrick Stewart the best performer in SF TV ever)

Cheers ( when sitcoms were about stories and not disrespecting their own characters. Ted Danson was great)

Every one of those shows were awesome.

Only now watching Star Trek:Voyager, and it's really a well made show. Trekkers must have been spoiled to put this down so much)

IIRC the general attitude toward Voyager was 'Well, it's still better than most of the crap on TV.'
I found plenty of stuff I preferred to watch than VOY. It gave me a headache from my eyes rolling into the back of my head so much.

Well it might be true to say VOY was better than most of the rubbish on TV, but that's hardly a ringing endorsement of VOY.

After all one saying is that 90% of TV is rubbish, all that means is VOY might creep into the bottom end of the 10% that isn't.

How we view a programme could depend on our viewing habits, i.e for those new to SF or ST if VOY was their introduction they might find it intersting, for others who have been long time genre/ST fans they might find it repetative. Then we have those who prefer the long form stroy telling with arcs etc.. and those who prefer the more episodic form.

Simply put you can't please everyone all of the time, and unlike when TNG started, VOY had much more in the way of compitition within the genre and TBTB decided to stick with the tried and tested formula for ST even if I like others think it was going stale.

There were shows better than Voyager but this was before everyone started plagiarizing the Sopranos radical idea to have television shows with high artistic standards. Most of the 90s network TV was glib interchangeable family sitcoms based on catchphrases trying to teach you the lesson that men should be ashamed of masculinity.

Home Improvement
Batman (the animated series)
Superman (the animated series)
Sonic the Hedgehog (AOSTH. I didn't knew SatAM at that time)
Pinky And The Brain
Tiny Toons
Animaniacs
Doug
Rugrats
Rocko's Modern Life
Timon & Pumbaa
... and many more Disney & Warner Bros cartoons.

When I was a kid I enjoyed shows like Home Improvement, but shows like that warped my mind at a very impressionable age. I went into my high school years expecting that these represent how men and women actually interact with each other, and that women would be offended by male assertiveness.

These shows, all men who act macho are phony, all maleness is a cause symptom of stupidity, all men are emotionally braindead, and all women are infinitely forgiving beings of sagelike wisdom. This is not what young boys should be watching at their most impressionable age.

If I ever have kids, I won't worry about the action films they want to watch and ban them from watching shows like that.

Over the years I shudder at the male stereotypes that are perpetuated over and over again such as most men, husbands and fathers aren't that bright and prone to stupidity. Or they have huge egos. The smart-ass kid who always knows better than the adults. Kids who so often have an attitude and roll their eyes with exasperation when dealing with their parents, and these aren't just teenagers but younger kids.
